When we returned from Hunayn, Umar asked the Prophet ﷺ about a vow he had made during the days of ignorance to perform itikaf, and the Prophet ﷺ instructed him to fulfill it.Some narrators reported it as Hammad from Ayub from Nafi from Ibn Umar. Jareer bin Hazim and Hammad bin Salama narrated it from Ayub from Nafi from Ibn Umar from the Prophet ﷺ.
Bukhari narrated from Abu Numan, from Hammad bin Zayd, from Ayub, from Nafi, that Umar said, "I made a vow." This was transmitted as mursal.Hammad bin Salama, Jareer bin Hazim, and Muammar connected it, from Ayub. And Ubaydullah connected it, from Nafi.
Hafiz, may Allah have mercy on him, said in Fath (Bari), "He only cited the mursal route of Hammad bin Zayd to indicate that his narration is the weaker one, because a group of the companions of his teacher Ayub differed with him and connected it. In fact, some of the companions of Hammad bin Zayd narrated it as connected, as Bukhari indicated here." This is the gist of what he meant. To clarify what Hafiz, may Allah have mercy on him, said and what Daraqutni, may Allah have mercy on him, indicated, Hammad bin Salama connected it, as found in Muslim, volume 11, page 126, as did Jareer bin Hazim and Maamar, also in Muslim, and Sufyan Thawri, in Nasai, volume 7, page 20, all of them from Ayub, from Nafi, from Ibn Umar.Ahmad bin Abdah Dabbi narrated it, saying, Hammad bin Zayd narrated to us, Ayub narrated to us, from Nafi, who said, "The hadith was mentioned in the presence of Ibn Umar," found in Muslim, volume 11, page 125.Ubaydullah bin Umar followed Ayub in connecting it, as found in Bukhari, volume 4, page 284 (printing S), Muslim, volume 11, pages 124 and 125, Abu Dawud, volume 2, page 217, Tirmidhi, volume 3, page 48, Nasai, volume 7, page 20, Abd bin Humayd in his Musnad, volume 1, page 8, Ibn Majah, volume 1, page 687, and Ahmad, volume 2, page 20 and page 8.
