We set out with the Prophet ﷺ toward Khaybar, traveling by night. A man from the company said to Amir, "Amir, won't you let us hear some of your verses?" Amir was a poet, so he dismounted and began chanting to urge the camels on, saying:"O Allah, were it not for You we would not have been guided, nor given charity, nor prayed. So forgive us, may we be ransomed for You, for whatever we leave behind, and make our feet firm if we meet the enemy, and send down tranquility upon us. When we are called to battle we come, and with shouting they have called upon us."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked, "Who is this driver?"They said, "Amir bin al-Akwa."He said, "May Allah have mercy on him."A man from the company said, "It is guaranteed for him, Prophet of Allah. If only you had let us benefit from him longer."We came to Khaybar and besieged them until severe hunger struck us. Then Allah Most High granted them victory over it. On the evening of the day it was conquered, the people lit many fires. The Prophet ﷺ asked, "What are these fires? What are you cooking?"They said, "Meat."He asked, "What meat?"They said, "The meat of domestic donkeys."The Prophet ﷺ said, "Pour it out and break the pots."A man said, "Messenger of Allah, may we pour it out and wash the pots?"He said, "That will do."When the men drew up in ranks for battle, Amir's sword was short. He reached out with it to strike the leg of a Jewish fighter, but the blade rebounded and struck the front of Amir's own knee, and he died from it.When they were returning, Salama said, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw me and took me by the hand. He asked, "What is the matter with you?"I said to him, "May my father and mother be your ransom. They claim that Amir's deeds have come to nothing."The Prophet ﷺ said, "Whoever said that has lied. He has two rewards," and he joined two of his fingers together. "He was one who strove and struggled. Few Arabs have walked the earth like him."Qutayba narrated to us, Hatim narrated to us, he said, "He grew up there."
