Masruq reported,

We entered upon Ayesha رضي الله عنها and found Hassan bin Thabit with her, reciting poetry to her, courting with verses of his, and he recited,"A chaste, dignified woman, never suspected of any wrong, Who rises in the morning hungry rather than feast on the flesh of heedless women."Ayesha said to him, "But you are not such a man."Masruq said, I asked her, "Why do you permit him to come in to you, when Allah Almighty has said, 'And as for the one among them who took the greater share in it, for him is a great punishment' [Nur 24:11]?"She replied, "And what punishment is more severe than blindness?" Then she said to me, "He used to defend the Messenger of Allah ﷺ," or, "answer back on his behalf in poetry."
