His uncle had been absent from Badr, so he said, "I missed the first battle the Prophet ﷺ fought. If Allah lets me witness a battle alongside the Prophet ﷺ, Allah will surely see what I do."He took part in the day of Uhud, and when the people were routed, he said, "O Allah, I apologize to You for what these people have done," meaning the Muslims, "and I disown what the polytheists have brought."Then he advanced with his sword and met Saad bin Muaz, who asked him, "Where are you going, Saad?"He replied, "I can smell the fragrance of Paradise from beyond Uhud."He pressed on and was killed. He was not recognized until his sister identified him by a mole, or by his fingertips. On his body were more than eighty wounds from stabs, sword blows, and arrows.
