I came to Sham and prayed two rak'ahs. Then I said, "Allah, grant me a righteous companion to sit with."So I went to a group of people and sat with them, and an elderly man came and sat beside me.I asked, "Who is this?"They replied, "Abu Darda."I said to him, "I asked Allah to grant me a righteous companion to sit with, and He granted me you."He asked, "Where are you from?"I answered, "From the people of Kufa."He said, "Do you not have among you the son of Umm Abd, the keeper of the sandals, the cushion, and the water vessel? And among you is the one whom Allah granted refuge from Satan, meaning through the tongue of His Prophet ﷺ. And is there not among you the keeper of the Prophet's ﷺ secret which no one else knows?"Then he asked, "How does Abdullah recite 'By the night when it covers'?"So I recited to him, "By the night when it covers, and the day when it appears in brightness," [Layl 92:1–2] and "the male and the female."He said, "By Allah, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ taught me to recite it this way, from his mouth to mine."
