Ali proposed to marry the daughter of Abu Jahl. When Fatimah heard about this, she came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "Your people claim that you do not become angry on behalf of your daughters. Here is Ali about to marry the daughter of Abu Jahl."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then stood up. I heard him, after pronouncing the testimony of faith, say, "To proceed, I gave my daughter in marriage to Abu al-As bin Rabi, and he spoke truthfully to me and kept his word. Fatimah is a part of me, and I hate that anyone should cause her distress. By Allah, the daughter of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and the daughter of the enemy of Allah shall never be joined together under one man."So Ali abandoned the proposal.Muhammad bin Amr bin Halhalah added, on the authority of Ibn Shihab, from Ali bin al-Husayn, from Miswar, "I heard the Prophet ﷺ mention a son-in-law of his from Banu Abd Shams, and he praised him for how he conducted himself in their marriage relation. He spoke well of him, saying, 'He spoke truthfully to me, and he made me a promise and fulfilled it.'"
حدثنا أبو اليمان أخبرنا شعيب عن الزهري قال حدثني علي بن حسين أن
إن عليا خطب بنت أبي جهل فسمعت بذلك فاطمة فأتت رسول الله ﷺ فقالت يزعم قومك أنك لا تغضب لبناتك وهذا علي ناكح بنت أبي جهل فقام رسول الله ﷺ فسمعته حين تشهد يقول أما بعد أنكحت أبا العاص بن الربيع فحدثني وصدقني وإن فاطمة بضعة مني وإني أكره أن يسوءها والله لا تجتمع بنت رسول الله ﷺ وبنت عدو الله عند رجل واحد فترك علي الخطبة وزاد محمد بن عمرو بن حلحلة عن ابن شهاب عن علي بن الحسين عن مسور سمعت النبي ﷺ وذكر صهرا له من بني عبد شمس فأثنى عليه في مصاهرته إياه فأحسن قال حدثني فصدقني ووعدني فوفى لي
