I was sitting with Abdullah and Abu Musa Ashari when Abu Musa said to him, "If a man becomes ritually impure and cannot find water for a month, would he not perform tayammum and pray? So what do you make of this verse in Surah al-Maidah, 'and you do not find water, then perform tayammum with clean earth' [Maidah 5:6]?"Abdullah replied, "If they were granted this concession, they would soon resort to tayammum with earth whenever they found the water too cold."I said, "So is this the reason you disliked it?"He said, "Yes."Abu Musa then said, "Have you not heard what Ammar said to Umar? 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent me on an errand and I became ritually impure but could not find water, so I rolled in the dust as a riding animal does. I mentioned this to the Prophet ﷺ and he said, It would have been enough for you to do this. He then struck the ground once with his palm, shook it off, then wiped the back of his right hand with his left, or the back of his left with his right, then wiped his face with them.'"Abdullah said, "Did you not see that Umar was not satisfied with Ammar's statement?"Wazad reported, narrating from Amash, from Shaqiq, "I was with Abdullah and Abu Musa, and Abu Musa said, 'Have you not heard what Ammar said to Umar? The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent me and you on a mission. I became ritually impure and rolled in the dust. We came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and informed him, and he said, It would have been enough for you to do this, and he wiped his face and his hands a single time.'"
حدثنا محمد بن سلام قال أخبرنا أبو معاوية عن الأعمش
كنت جالسا مع عبد الله وأبي موسى الأشعري فقال له أبو موسى لو أن رجلا أجنب فلم يجد الماء شهرا أما كان يتيمم ويصلي فكيف تصنعون بهذه الآية في سورة المائدة {فلم تجدوا ماء فتيمموا صعيدا طيبا} فقال عبد الله لو رخص لهم في هذا لأوشكوا إذا برد عليهم الماء أن يتيمموا الصعيد قلت وإنما كرهتم هذا لذا قال نعم فقال أبو موسى ألم تسمع قول عمار لعمر بعثني رسول الله ﷺ في حاجة فأجنبت فلم أجد الماء فتمرغت في الصعيد كما تمرغ الدابة فذكرت ذلك للنبي ﷺ فقال إنما كان يكفيك أن تصنع هكذا فضرب بكفه ضربة على الأرض ثم نفضها ثم مسح بهما ظهر كفه بشماله أو ظهر شماله بكفه ثم مسح بهما وجهه فقال عبد الله أفلم تر عمر لم يقنع بقول عمار وزاد يعلى عن الأعمش عن شقيق كنت مع عبد الله وأبي موسى فقال أبو موسى ألم تسمع قول عمار لعمر إن رسول الله ﷺ بعثني أنا وأنت فأجنبت فتمعكت بالصعيد فأتينا رسول الله ﷺ فأخبرناه فقال إنما كان يكفيك هكذا ومسح وجهه وكفيه واحدة
