Sahl bin Abu Hathma reported,

Abdullah bin Sahl and Muhaysa bin Masud bin Zayd set out for Khaybar, which at that time was under a peace agreement. They parted ways, and then Muhaysa came upon Abdullah bin Sahl lying murdered, soaked in his own blood. He buried him and then returned to Medina.Abdul-Rahman bin Sahl, along with Muhaysa and Huwaysa, the two sons of Masud, went to the Prophet ﷺ. Abdul-Rahman began to speak, but the Prophet ﷺ said, "Let the eldest speak, let the eldest speak," since he was the youngest of the group. So he fell silent, and the other two spoke. The Prophet ﷺ said, "Will you swear an oath and thereby establish your right against your killer," or he said, "your companion's killer?"They replied, "How can we swear when we did not witness it and did not see it?"He said, "Then the Jews can clear themselves by fifty oaths."They said, "How can we accept the oaths of a disbelieving people?"So the Prophet ﷺ paid the blood-money for him from his own resources.
