The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "If the wealth of Bahrain were to come to me, I would give you this much, and this much, and this much." But it did not arrive before the Prophet ﷺ passed away. When the wealth of Bahrain finally came, Abu Bakr ordered an announcer to call out, "Whoever had a debt or a promise from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, let him come to us."So I came to him and said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ told me such and such."He scooped out three handfuls for me. Sufyan would demonstrate by scooping with both his palms together, then he said to us, "This is how Ibn Munkadir showed us."On another occasion he said, I came to Abu Bakr and asked him, but he did not give me anything. Then I came to him again, and he did not give me anything. Then I came to him a third time and said, "I asked you and you did not give me, then I asked you and you did not give me, then I asked you and you did not give me. So either give me, or be miserly toward me."Abu Bakr replied, "Did you say I am being miserly toward you? Nothing has prevented me from giving you any time except that I intended to give you."Sufyan said, Amr narrated to us from Muhammad bin Ali, from Jabir, that he scooped out a handful for me and said, "Count it." I found it to be five hundred. He said, "Then take twice that amount."And he, meaning Ibn Munkadir, said, "What disease is worse than miserliness?"
حدثنا علي حدثنا سفيان حدثنا محمد بن المنكدر سمع
قال رسول الله ﷺ لو قد جاءني مال البحرين لقد أعطيتك هكذا وهكذا وهكذا فلم يجئ حتى قبض النبي ﷺ فلما جاء مال البحرين أمر أبو بكر مناديا فنادى من كان له عند رسول الله ﷺ دين أو عدة فليأتنا فأتيته فقلت إن رسول الله ﷺ قال لي كذا وكذا فحثا لي ثلاثا وجعل سفيان يحثو بكفيه جميعا ثم قال لنا هكذا قال لنا ابن المنكدر وقال مرة فأتيت أبا بكر فسألت فلم يعطني ثم أتيته فلم يعطني ثم أتيته الثالثة فقلت سألتك فلم تعطني ثم سألتك فلم تعطني ثم سألتك فلم تعطني فإما أن تعطيني وإما أن تبخل عني قال قلت تبخل عني ما منعتك من مرة إلا وأنا أريد أن أعطيك قال سفيان وحدثنا عمرو عن محمد بن علي عن جابر فحثا لي حثية وقال عدها فوجدتها خمس مائة قال فخذ مثلها مرتين وقال يعني ابن المنكدر وأي داء أدوأ من البخل
