He was with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ until, while on the road to Mecca, he stayed behind with some of his companions who were in the state of ihram, while he himself was not in ihram. He spotted a wild donkey and mounted his horse. He asked his companions to hand him his whip, but they refused. He asked them for his spear, but they refused again. So he took it himself, then charged at the donkey and killed it. Some of the Prophet's ﷺ companions ate from it, while others refused. When they caught up with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, they asked him about this. He said, "It is simply food that Allah has provided for you to eat."Zayd bin Aslam reported from Ata bin Yasar from Abu Qatada regarding the wild donkey, similar to the hadith of Abu Nadr. He said, "Do you have any of its meat with you?"
