He related that a man from the Ansar disputed with Zubayr over the irrigation channels of al-Harrah, by which the palm trees were watered. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Water your land, Zubayr, then let the water flow to your neighbor."The Ansari said, "Is it because he is the son of your aunt?"The face of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ changed color, and then he said, "Water your land, Zubayr, then hold back the water until it returns to the walls." He thus secured for Zubayr his full right.Zubayr said, "By Allah, this verse was revealed concerning that incident, 'But no, by your Lord, they will not truly believe until they make you judge in what disputes arise between them' [Nisa 4:65]."Ibn Shihab said to me, "The Ansar and the people interpreted the Prophet's ﷺ statement, 'Water your land, then hold back until it returns to the walls,' as meaning up to the level of the ankles."
حدثنا محمد هو ابن سلام أخبرنا مخلد بن يزيد الحراني قال أخبرني ابن جريج قال حدثني ابن شهاب
أنه حدثه أن رجلا من الأنصار خاصم الزبير في شراج من الحرة يسقي بها النخل فقال رسول الله ﷺ اسق يا زبير فأمره بالمعروف ثم أرسل إلى جارك فقال الأنصاري أن كان ابن عمتك فتلون وجه رسول الله ﷺ ثم قال اسق ثم احبس يرجع الماء إلى الجدر واستوعى له حقه فقال الزبير والله إن هذه الآية أنزلت في ذلك {فلا وربك لا يؤمنون حتى يحكموك فيما شجر بينهم} قال لي ابن شهاب فقدرت الأنصار والناس قول النبي ﷺ اسق ثم احبس حتى يرجع إلى الجدر وكان ذلك إلى الكعبين
