When Ibn Hisham forbade women from performing tawaf alongside men, he said, "How can he forbid them when the wives of the Prophet ﷺ performed tawaf with the men?"I asked, "Was that after the verse of hijab was revealed, or before?"He replied, "Yes, by my life, I witnessed it after hijab."I asked, "How did they mix with the men?"He answered, "They did not mix with them. Ayesha used to perform tawaf at a distance from the men, not mingling with them. A woman said to her, 'Come, let us touch the Black Stone, Umm Muiminin.'She replied, 'You go on without me,' and she refused. They would go out at night, disguised, and perform tawaf with the men. But when they entered the Kabah, they would wait until they could go in after the men had been removed. Ubayd bin Umayr and I used to visit Ayesha while she was staying in seclusion in the heart of Mount Thabir."I asked, "And what was her screen of seclusion?"He said, "She was inside a Turkish-style domed tent with a covering, and there was nothing between us and her except that. I saw her wearing a rose-colored shift."
