Abdullah bin Umar reported,

He informed him that Umar set out with the Prophet ﷺ among a group of men toward Ibn Sayyad, and they found him playing with the boys near the fortress of Banu Maghalah. Ibn Sayyad had nearly reached the age of puberty. He did not notice them until the Prophet ﷺ struck him with his hand, then said to him, "Do you bear witness that I am the Messenger of Allah?"Ibn Sayyad looked at him and said, "I bear witness that you are the messenger of the unlettered ones."Then Ibn Sayyad said to the Prophet ﷺ, "Do you bear witness that I am the messenger of Allah?"The Prophet ﷺ rejected this and said, "I believe in Allah and His messengers."Then he asked him, "What do you see?"Ibn Sayyad replied, "A truthful one and a liar come to me."The Prophet ﷺ said, "The matter has been confused for you."Then the Prophet ﷺ said to him, "I have concealed something for you."Ibn Sayyad said, "It is the smoke."The Prophet ﷺ said, "Be gone! You will never surpass your rank."Umar said, "Messenger of Allah, let me strike off his head."The Prophet ﷺ said, "If he is the one, you will not be given power over him, and if he is not, there is no good for you in killing him."

حدثنا عبدان أخبرنا عبد الله عن يونس عن الزهري قال أخبرني سالم بن عبد الله أن

ابن عمر رضي الله عنهما

أخبره أن عمر انطلق مع النبي ﷺ في رهط قبل ابن صياد حتى وجدوه يلعب مع الصبيان عند أطم بني مغالة وقد قارب ابن صياد الحلم فلم يشعر حتى ضرب النبي ﷺ بيده ثم قال لابن صياد تشهد أني رسول الله فنظر إليه ابن صياد فقال أشهد أنك رسول الأميين فقال ابن صياد للنبي ﷺ أتشهد أني رسول الله فرفضه وقال آمنت بالله وبرسله فقال له ماذا ترى قال ابن صياد يأتيني صادق وكاذب فقال النبي ﷺ خلط عليك الأمر ثم قال له النبي ﷺ إني قد خبأت لك خبيئا فقال ابن صياد هو الدخ فقال اخسأ فلن تعدو قدرك فقال عمر رضي الله عنه دعني يا رسول الله أضرب عنقه فقال النبي ﷺ إن يكنه فلن تسلط عليه وإن لم يكنه فلا خير لك في قتله
