Anas reported, "Abdul-Rahman bin Awf came to us, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ established a bond of brotherhood between him and Saad bin Rabi. Saad was a man of considerable wealth, and he said to Abdul-Rahman, 'The Ansar know that I am among the wealthiest of them. I will divide my wealth into two halves between us. I also have two wives, so look at whichever of them pleases you more, and I will divorce her. Once her waiting period is complete, you may marry her.'Abdul-Rahman replied, 'May Allah bless you in your family and wealth.'He did not return that day until he had earned some butter and dried curd. Only a short time passed before he came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with traces of yellow perfume on him.The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked him, 'What is this?'He answered, 'I have married a woman from the Ansar.'The Prophet asked, 'How much did you give her as a dowry?'He replied, 'The weight of a date-stone in gold,' or 'a date-stone of gold.'The Prophet said, 'Hold a wedding feast, even if only with a sheep.'"
Bukhari narrated it in the Virtues of the Ansar (3781) from Qutayba, who said, Ismail bin Jafar narrated to us, from Humayd, from Anas, and he mentioned it.Muslim narrated it in the Book of Marriage (1427:81) through another route from Qatada and Humayd, from Anas, in abridged form.
