Burayda said, "I went on a military expedition with Ali to Yemen, and I noticed some harshness from him. When I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, I mentioned Ali and spoke critically of him. I saw the face of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ change, and he said, 'Burayda, am I not closer to the believers than they are to themselves?'I replied, 'Yes indeed, Messenger of Allah.'He said, 'Whoever I am his master, Ali is his master.'"
غزوت مع علي اليمن، فرأيت منه جفوة، فلما قدمت على رسول الله ﷺ ذكرت عليا، فتنقصته، فرأيت وجه رسول الله ﷺ يتغير، فقال: يا بريدة، ألست أولى بالمؤمنين من أنفسهم؟ قلت: بلى يا رسول الله، قال: من كنت مولاه فعلي مولاه.
Ahmad narrated it (22945), and Nasai in Khasais Ali (82), and Hakim graded it sahih (3/110), all of them via Abu Naeem Fadl bin Dukayn, who said, Abdul-Malik bin Abu Ghaniyya narrated to us, from Hakam (he is Ibn Utayba), from Saeed bin Jubayr, from Ibn Abbas, from Burayda, who mentioned it. Its chain of transmission is sahih.
