A man came to Ibn Umar and asked him about Uthman. Ibn Umar mentioned the good deeds of Uthman, then said, "Perhaps this displeases you?"The man replied, "Yes."Ibn Umar said, "May Allah rub your nose in the dust."Then the man asked him about Ali. Ibn Umar mentioned the good deeds of Ali and said, "There he is, his house is in the middle of the houses of the Prophet ﷺ." Then he said, "Perhaps this displeases you?"The man answered, "Indeed."Ibn Umar said, "May Allah rub your nose in the dust. Go and do your worst against me."
جاء رجل إلى ابن عمر، فسأله عن عثمان، فذكر عن محاسن عمله، قال: لعل ذاك يسوؤك؟ قال: نعم. قال: فأرغم الله بأنفك. ثم سأله عن علي، فذكر محاسن عمله، قال: هو ذاك بيته أوسط بيوت النبي ﷺ، ثم قال: لعل ذاك يسوؤك؟ قال: أجل. قال: فأرغم الله بأنفك، انطلق فاجهد علي جهدك.
Bukhari narrated it in Fadail al-Sahabah (3704) from Muhammad bin Rafi, from Husayn, from Zaida, from Abu Husayn, from Saad bin Ubayda, who said, and then mentioned it.It was also narrated from Talha bin Ubaydullah, who said, the Prophet ﷺ said, "Every prophet has a companion, and my companion" meaning in Paradise "is Uthman." Tirmidhi (3698) narrated it, as did Abdullah bin Ahmad in his additions to Fadail (860-861), and Abu Yaala (665), all of them by way of Yahya bin Yaman, from a shaykh of Banu Zahra, from Harith bin Abdul-Rahman bin Abu Dhiab, from Talha bin Ubaydullah, who said, and then mentioned it. Tirmidhi said, "This is a gharib hadith, and its isnad is not strong, and it is munqati (broken)." And it is as he said, for Yahya bin Yaman is daif according to most scholars, and his shaykh is unknown. And the hadith of Harith bin Abdul-Rahman from Talha bin Ubaydullah is mursal, and this is what Tirmidhi pointed to when he said, "It is munqati."It was also narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Every prophet has a companion in Paradise, and my companion there is Uthman bin Affan." Ibn Majah (109) narrated it from Abu Marwan Muhammad bin Uthman Uthmani, from his father Uthman bin Khalid, from Abdul-Rahman bin Abu Zinad, from his father, from Araj, from Abu Hurairah, who then mentioned it. Its isnad is very daif, for Uthman bin Khalid (that is, Ibn Umar bin Abdullah Umawi, Abu Affan Madani) is munkar al-hadith, as Bukhari, Abu Hatim, and others have said. Busiri faulted it on this basis in Misbah Zujaja.It was also narrated from Abu Hurairah, who said, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood at the grave of his second daughter who had been married to Uthman, and said, "Is there a father of a widow, is there a brother of a widow, that Uthman may marry her? Even if there had been ten of them, I would have married them all to Uthman, and I only married her to him by revelation from heaven." And the Messenger of Allah ﷺ met Uthman at the door of the masjid and said, "O Uthman, this is Jibreel informing me that Allah has married you to Umm Kulthum on the like of the dowry of Ruqayya and on the like of her companionship." Ibn Majah (110) narrated it, and Tabarani in Al-Kabir (22/43), both by way of Abu Marwan Muhammad bin Uthman bin Khalid Uthmani, from his father Uthman bin Khalid, from Abdul-Rahman bin Abu Zinad, from Araj, from Abu Hurairah, who then mentioned it. Its isnad is very daif because of Uthman bin Khalid, for he is munkar al-hadith, as Bukhari, Abu Hatim, and others have said.It was also narrated from Jabir, who said, a funeral bier of a man was brought to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for him to pray over it, but he did not pray over it. It was said, "O Messenger of Allah, we have never seen you refuse to pray over anyone before this." He said, "He used to hate Uthman, so Allah hated him." Tirmidhi (3709) narrated it by way of Uthman bin Zafar, from Muhammad bin Ziyad, from Muhammad bin Ajlan, from Abu Zubayr, from Jabir, who then mentioned it. Tirmidhi said, "This is a gharib hadith which we do not know except by this route. Muhammad bin Ziyad, the companion of Maymun bin Mihran, is very daif in hadith. Muhammad bin Ziyad, the companion of Abu Hurairah, is a Basran and reliable, with the kunya Abu Harith. And Muhammad bin Ziyad Alhani, the companion of Abu Umama, is reliable, with the kunya Abu Sufyan, and is Shami." And it is as he said, for this Muhammad bin Ziyad is Tahhan Awar, matruk al-hadith, as Bukhari, Nasai, Abu Hatim, and others have said.
