Miswar bin Makhrama and Abdul-Rahman bin Aswad bin Abd Yaghuth said to him, "What prevents you from speaking to your maternal uncle Uthman about his brother Walid bin Uqba? People have been talking a great deal about what he has done."Ubaydullah said, "So I positioned myself in Uthman's path when he came out for the prayer and said to him, 'I have a need to bring before you, and it is a piece of sincere advice.'Uthman replied, 'Man, I seek refuge in Allah from you.'So I turned away. When the prayer was over, I sat with Miswar and Ibn Abd Yaghuth and told them what I had said to Uthman and what he had said to me.They said, 'You have discharged your duty.'While I was sitting with them, a messenger from Uthman came to me, and they said, 'Allah has put you to the test.'So I went off and entered upon him. He asked, 'What is this advice you mentioned earlier?'I gave the testimony of faith, then said, 'Allah sent Muhammad ﷺ and revealed to him the Book. You were among those who responded to Allah and His Messenger ﷺ and believed in him. You made the first two migrations, accompanied the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and witnessed his guidance. People have spoken much about the affair of Walid bin Uqba, so it is incumbent upon you to carry out the prescribed punishment on him.'He said to me, 'Nephew, did you meet the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?'I replied, 'No, but knowledge from him has reached me as it reaches the virgin behind her veil.'Then Uthman gave the testimony of faith and said, 'Allah sent Muhammad ﷺ with the truth and revealed to him the Book. I was among those who responded to Allah and His Messenger ﷺ, and I believed in what Muhammad ﷺ was sent with. I made the first two migrations as you said, accompanied the Messenger of Allah, and pledged allegiance to him. By Allah, I never disobeyed him nor was I disloyal to him until Allah took him. Then Allah appointed Abu Bakr as caliph, and by Allah, I neither disobeyed him nor was disloyal to him. Then Umar was appointed caliph, and by Allah, I neither disobeyed him nor was disloyal to him. Then I was appointed caliph. Do I not have over you the same right that they had over me?'I answered, 'Yes, indeed.'He said, 'Then what are these reports about you that are reaching me? As for what you mentioned regarding Walid bin Uqba, we shall deal with that, Allah willing, in accordance with the truth.'So Walid was given forty lashes. Uthman ordered Ali to flog him, and he was the one who carried it out.
Bukhari narrated it in "The Virtues of the Ansar" (3872) from Abdullah bin Muhammad Jafi, from Hisham, from Maamar, from Zuhri, from Urwa bin Zubayr, that Ubaydullah bin Adi bin Khiyar informed him, and he related it.He said after it, "Yunus and the nephew of Zuhri said, from Zuhri, 'Do I not have upon you the same right that they had?'"
