When Uthman was besieged, he looked down upon them and said, "I implore you, and I implore none but the companions of the Prophet ﷺ. Do you not know that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Whoever digs the well of Rumah will have Paradise,' and so I dug it? Do you not know that he said, 'Whoever equips the army of hardship will have Paradise,' and so I equipped it?"They confirmed the truth of what he said.
Bukhari related it in the Book of Wills (778), saying, Abdan said, my father informed me, from Shuba, from Abu Ishaq, from Abu Abdul-Rahman Sulami, that Uthman [narrated it, and he] mentioned it. Bukhari's statement "Abdan said" is taken to indicate a connected chain, and that is why Bayhaqi (6/167) said, Bukhari related it in his Sahih from Abdan, and Abdan is Abdullah bin Uthman bin Jabala, nicknamed Abdan, one of Bukhari's teachers.Ahmad (420), Nasai (3609), and Daraqutni (4/198) all related it, all of them through the route of Yunus bin Abu Ishaq, from his father, from Abu Salama bin Abdul-Rahman, who said, Uthman looked out from the palace while he was under siege and said, "I ask by Allah, who among you witnessed the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the day of Hira when the mountain shook, and he struck it with his foot and said, 'Be still, Hira, only a prophet, a truthful one, or a martyr are upon you,' and I was with him?" Several men bore witness for him. He said, "I ask by Allah, who among you witnessed the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the day of the Pledge of Ridwan, when he sent me to the polytheists, to the people of Makkah, and he said, 'This is my hand, and this is the hand of Uthman,' and so he pledged allegiance on my behalf?" Several men bore witness for him. He said, "I ask by Allah, who among you witnessed the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'Who will expand this house for us in the masjid in exchange for a house in Paradise?' and I bought it with my own money, and expanded the masjid with it?" Several men bore witness for him. He said, "I ask by Allah, who among you witnessed the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the day of the army of hardship, say, 'Who will spend an accepted expenditure today?' and I equipped half the army with my own money?" He said, several men bore witness for him. "And I ask by Allah, who among you witnessed the well of Ruma being sold, its water sold to the traveler, and I bought it with my own money and made it freely available to the traveler?" He said, several men bore witness for him.Its chain of transmission is sahih. Tirmidhi (3699) also related it through another route, from Zayd bin Abu Unaysa, from Abu Ishaq, in a similar manner, and he said, "This is a hasan sahih gharib hadith from this route, from the hadith of Abu Abdul-Rahman Sulami from Uthman."I say, Daraqutni, in Ilal (3/52), gave preference to what Shuba and those who followed him (meaning Zayd bin Abu Unaysa and others) related, but it is not unlikely that Abu Ishaq had two teachers, one being Abu Abdul-Rahman Sulami and the other Abu Salama bin Abdul-Rahman. As for the mention of Hira in the hadith, it contains an error, and the correct mountain is Uhud.Nasai (3182, 3606) and Ahmad (511) related it, and Ibn Khuzayma (2487) and Ibn Hibban (6920) graded it sahih, all of them through routes from Husayn (that is, Ibn Abdul-Rahman Sulami), from Amr bin Jawan, who said, Ahnaf said, We set out as pilgrims, and as we passed by Madinah, while we were in our lodging, someone came to us and said, "The people are gathered in fear in the masjid." So I and my companion went, and there were the people gathered around a group of men in the masjid. He said, I made my way through them until I stood over them, and there were Ali bin Abu Talib, Zubayr, Talha, and Saad bin Abu Waqqas. He said, no sooner had that happened than Uthman came walking and said, "Is Ali here?" They said, "Yes." He said, "Is Zubayr here?" They said, "Yes." He said, "Is Talha here?" They said, "Yes." He said, "Is Saad here?" They said, "Yes." He said, "I ask you by Allah, besides whom there is no god, do you know that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Whoever buys the stable land of the sons of so-and-so, Allah will forgive him,' and I bought it, and I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, 'I have bought it,' and he said, 'Make it part of our masjid, and its reward is yours'?" They said, "Yes."He said, "I ask you by Allah, besides whom there is no god, do you know that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Who will buy the well of Ruma?' and I bought it for such and such a price, and I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, 'I have bought it,' meaning the well of Ruma, and he said, 'Make it a watering place for the Muslims, and its reward is yours'?" They said, "Yes."He said, "I ask you by Allah, besides whom there is no god, do you know that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ looked at the faces of the people on the day of the army of hardship and said, 'Whoever equips these men, Allah will forgive him,' and I equipped them until they lacked neither a halter rope nor a hobbling rope?" They said, "By Allah, yes." He said, "Allah, bear witness. Allah, bear witness. Allah, bear witness." Then he left.Amr bin Jawan, also said to be Umar bin Jawan, had no one narrate from him except Husayn bin Abdul-Rahman, and no one deemed him reliable except Ibn Hibban, following his own principle of deeming reliable anyone in whom no defect has been identified. That is why Hafiz said of him that he is "acceptable," meaning when corroborated, otherwise his hadith is weak. I did not find any corroborator for him.
