When Abu Luluah stabbed Umar, he stabbed him twice. Umar suspected that he had some unknown enemy among the people, so he summoned Ibn Abbas, whom he loved, drew near to himself, and listened to. He said to him, "I would like you to find out from which group of people this came."Ibn Abbas went out, and he did not pass by any gathering of people without finding them weeping. He returned to Umar and said, "Commander of the Believers, I have not come upon any gathering of Muslims except that they were weeping, as though today they had lost their firstborn children."Umar asked, "Who killed me?"Ibn Abbas replied, "Abu Luluah the Magian, the slave of Mughira bin Shuba."Ibn Abbas said, "I saw the joy on his face, and he said, 'Praise be to Allah, who did not put me to trial through people who claim my success.'" He meant, "There is no god but Allah. I had forbidden you from bringing any of these foreigners to us, but you disobeyed me."Then he said, "Call my brothers for me."They asked, "Who?"He said, "Uthman, Ali, Talha, Zubayr, Abdul-Rahman bin Awf, and Saad bin Abu Waqqas."So he sent for them, then he placed his head on my lap. When they came, I said, "These men have arrived."He said, "Yes. I have considered the affair of the Muslims, and I have found you, the six of you, to be the leaders of the people and their chieftains. This matter cannot be in anyone's hands but yours. As long as you remain upright, the affairs of the people will remain upright. If there is to be discord, it will be among you."When I heard him mention discord and division, I supposed it would happen, for rarely did he say something without my seeing it come to pass. Then his blood flowed heavily, and they began whispering among themselves until I feared they would pledge allegiance to one of them. I said, "The Commander of the Believers is still alive, and there cannot be two caliphs each looking at the other."Umar said, "Lift me up."We lifted him, and he said, "Take counsel for three days, and let Suhayb lead the people in prayer."Someone asked, "With whom should they consult, Commander of the Believers?"He said, "Consult the Muhajirun, the Ansar, and the leaders of the army units present here."Then he called for a drink of milk and drank it, and the white milk came out through the two wounds, so he knew it was death. He said, "Now, if I had the entire world, I would ransom myself with it from the terror of what is to come. Yet, with all that, praise be to Allah, I have seen nothing but good."Ibn Abbas said, "Even if you say that, may Allah reward you with good. Did not the Messenger of Allah ﷺ pray that Allah would strengthen the religion and the Muslims through you when they were afraid and weak? When you embraced Islam, your conversion was a source of might, and through you Islam, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and his companions became prominent. You emigrated to Medina, and your emigration was a victory. Then we were not absent from any battle the Messenger of Allah ﷺ witnessed against the polytheists, on such-and-such a day and such-and-such a day. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed away while pleased with you. You supported the caliph after him upon the path of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and you struck down those who turned away with those who came forward, until people entered Islam willingly or unwillingly. Then the caliph passed away while pleased with you. Then you yourself were entrusted with authority in the best manner anyone has ever held authority over the people. Through you Allah strengthened the helpers, through you wealth was collected, through you the enemy was driven away, and through you Allah brought into every household expansion in their religion and expansion in their provisions. Then He sealed your life with martyrdom, so congratulations to you."Umar said, "By Allah, the deceived one is he whom you flatter." Then he said, "Will you bear witness for me, Abdullah, before the Mother of the Believers, Ayesha?"Ibn Abbas said, "Yes."Then Umar said, "O Allah, to You belongs all praise. Press my cheek to the ground, Abdullah bin Umar." So he moved him from his thigh onto his shin. Umar said, "Press my cheek to the ground." He kept saying it until his cheek was placed against the ground, and he said, "Woe to you and woe to your mother, Umar, if Allah does not forgive you."Then he passed away, may Allah have mercy on him. When he died, they sent for Abdullah bin Umar, but he said, "I will not come to you unless you do what I command you, namely consulting the Muhajirun, the Ansar, and the leaders of the army units present here."Hasan, when Umar's conduct at his death and his fear of his Lord were mentioned to him, said, "Such is the believer. He combines good deeds with apprehension, while the hypocrite combines evil deeds with self-assurance. By Allah, I have not found, neither in those who have passed nor in those who remain, a servant whose good deeds increased except that his fear and apprehension before Allah also increased, nor have I found, neither in those who have passed nor in those who remain, a servant whose evil deeds increased except that his self-assurance increased."
Tabarani related it in al-Awsat (583) from Ahmad (that is, Qasim bin Musawir), who said, Saeed bin Sulayman Wasiti told us, who said, Mubarak bin Fadala told us, who said, Ubaydullah bin Umar told us, from Nafi, from Ibn Umar, and he related it.Its isnad is hasan because of Mubarak bin Fadala, for his hadith is generally hasan, and Haythami graded it hasan in al-Majma (9/74-76).Note, the wording "Press my cheek to the ground, O Abdullah bin Umar" appears this way in the printed edition, but the correct reading is "Abdullah bin Abbas," because Abdullah bin Umar was not present with him at that time, as is indicated by the end of the hadith, namely its statement, "Then he passed away, may Allah have mercy on him, and when he passed away, they sent for Abdullah bin Umar."
