Abu Burda bin Abu Musa Ashari reported,

Abdullah bin Umar said to me, "Do you know what my father said to your father?"I replied, "No."He said, "My father said to your father, 'Abu Musa, would it please you that our acceptance of Islam alongside the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, our migration with him, our struggle with him, and all our deeds done with him, were credited to us as a reward, while every deed we have performed after him we simply escaped from, breaking even, neither gaining nor losing?'My father replied, 'No, by Allah. We have struggled after the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, we have prayed, we have fasted, we have done much good, and many people have embraced Islam at our hands, and we surely hope for reward in all of that.'But my father, Umar, said, 'As for me, by the One in whose hand is Umar's soul, I would love that all of that were credited to us as a reward, and that everything we did afterward, we merely escaped from, breaking even, neither gaining nor losing.'"So I said, "By Allah, your father is better than my father."
