The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Ask me."But they were in awe of him and reluctant to question him. Then a man came and sat down by his knees and said, "Messenger of Allah, what is Islam?"He replied, "That you associate nothing with Allah, establish the prayer, pay the zakat, and fast Ramadan."The man said, "You have spoken the truth."Then he asked, "Messenger of Allah, what is faith?"He replied, "That you believe in Allah, His angels, His Book, the meeting with Him, and His messengers, that you believe in the resurrection, and that you believe in divine decree, all of it."The man said, "You have spoken the truth."He then narrated the hadith in its full length.
قال رسول الله ﷺ: سلوني. فهابوه أن يسألوه، فجاء رجل فجلس عند ركبتيه، فقال: يا رسول الله، ما الإسلام؟ قال: لا تشرك بالله شيئا، وتقيم الصلاة، وتؤتي الزكاة، وتصوم رمضان. قال: صدقت. قال: يا رسول الله، ما الإيمان؟ قال: أن تؤمن بالله وملائكته وكتابه ولقائه ورسله، وتؤمن بالبعث وتؤمن بالقدر كله. قال: صدقت. فذكر الحديث بطوله.
Muslim narrated it in the Book of Faith (10) from Zuhayr bin Harb, who said, Jareer narrated to us, from Umara (that is, Ibn Qaqa), from Abu Zura, from Abu Hurairah, and he related the hadith.Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Faith (50) through Ismail bin Ibrahim (known as Ibn Ulaya), and in the Book of Tafsir (4777) through Jareer bin Abdul-Hameed, both of them from Abu Hayan Taymi, from Abu Zura, with his chain, and its wording is, "That you believe in Allah, His angels, meeting Him, and His messengers, and that you believe in the resurrection," without mentioning the scriptures or divine decree.As for belief in the scriptures, it appears in the narration of Asili, as the Hafiz noted in Fath al-Bari. As for belief in divine decree, Ismaili added it in his Mustakhraj.Abu Dawud (4698) and Nasai (4991) both narrated it through Jareer, from Abu Farwa Hamdani, from Abu Zura bin Amr bin Jareer, from Abu Dharr and Abu Hurairah, who said, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to sit among his companions, and when a stranger came, no one could tell who he was until he asked. So we asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to let us build him a place where a stranger could recognize him when he arrived. So we built him a clay platform on which he would sit.One day, while we were sitting and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was in his place, a man approached, the most handsome of people in face and the most pleasant of people in scent, as though no dirt had ever touched his clothes, until he greeted us at the edge of the mat.He then related the hadith at length. Abu Dawud shortened it.
