Ayesha said, "I never knew my parents to be following anything other than this religion, and not a day passed except that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to us at both ends of the day, morning and evening. When the Muslims were put to trial, Abu Bakr set out as an emigrant heading toward Abyssinia. When he reached Bark al-Ghimad, Ibn al-Daghinah, the chief of the Qarah tribe, met him and asked, 'Where are you going, Abu Bakr?'Abu Bakr replied, 'My people have driven me out, so I want to roam the earth and worship my Lord.'Ibn al-Daghinah said, 'Someone like you should not leave, nor should he be driven out. You help the destitute, maintain ties of kinship, bear the burdens of others, are hospitable to guests, and assist in matters of truth. I grant you my protection. Go back and worship your Lord in your own land.'So Ibn al-Daghinah traveled back with Abu Bakr and went around to the noblemen of Quraysh, telling them, 'Someone like Abu Bakr should not leave, nor should he be driven out. Would you really expel a man who helps the destitute, maintains ties of kinship, bears the burdens of others, is hospitable to guests, and assists in matters of truth?'Quraysh accepted Ibn al-Daghinah's protection of Abu Bakr and granted him security, but they said to Ibn al-Daghinah, 'Tell Abu Bakr to worship his Lord inside his own house. He may pray and recite as he wishes, but he must not disturb us with it or do so publicly, for we fear he may seduce our sons and women.'Ibn al-Daghinah conveyed this to Abu Bakr, and Abu Bakr began worshipping his Lord inside his house, not making his prayer or recitation public outside of it. Then Abu Bakr decided to build a small place of prayer in the courtyard of his house, where he would step out, pray, and recite the Quran. The women and children of the polytheists began crowding around him, marveling at him and watching him.Abu Bakr was a man who wept easily and could not hold back his tears when he recited the Quran. This alarmed the noblemen of the polytheist Quraysh, so they sent for Ibn al-Daghinah. When he came to them, they said, 'We granted Abu Bakr protection on the condition that he worship his Lord inside his own house, but he has gone beyond that and built a place of prayer in the courtyard of his house, openly praying and reciting. We fear he may seduce our sons and women. Go to him. If he is willing to confine himself to worshipping his Lord inside his house, he may do so. But if he refuses to do anything but practice openly, then ask him to release you from your pledge of protection, for we do not wish to break our agreement with you, nor do we accept that Abu Bakr practice openly.'"Ayesha continued, "So Ibn al-Daghinah came to Abu Bakr and said, 'You know the terms on which I made the pact for you. Either restrict yourself to that, or release me from my obligation, for I do not wish the Arabs to hear that I broke faith regarding a man with whom I had made a pact.'Abu Bakr replied, 'I return to you your protection, and I am content with the protection of Allah.'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was in Mecca at that time, and he said, 'I have been shown the place of your emigration. I saw a salt flat with palm trees between two lava fields,' meaning the two harrahs. So those who emigrated set out for Medina when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ mentioned this, and some of those who had emigrated to Abyssinia returned to Medina. Abu Bakr prepared to emigrate, but the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him, 'Wait, for I am hoping that I will be given permission.'Abu Bakr asked, 'May my father be ransomed for you, do you really hope for that?'He said, 'Yes.'So Abu Bakr held himself back to accompany the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he fed two riding camels he owned with the leaves of the samur tree for four months."
