Umar bin Khattab delivered a sermon at al-Jabiyah and said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ once stood among us as I now stand among you, and he said, 'I urge you to treat my companions well, then those who come after them, then those who come after them. After that, falsehood will spread, until a man will rush to give testimony before he is even asked for it. Whoever among you desires the heart of Paradise, let him hold fast to the community, for Satan is with the one who is alone, and he is farther from two. Let none of you be alone with a woman, for Satan is the third one present. Whoever is gladdened by his good deeds and grieved by his bad deeds is a believer.'"
أن عمر بن الخطاب خطب بالجابية، فقال: قام فينا رسول الله ﷺ مقامي فيكم، فقال: استوصوا بأصحابي خيرا، ثم الذين يلونهم ثم الذين يلونهم ثم يفشو الكذب حتى إن الرجل ليبتدئ بالشهادة قبل أن يسألها، فمن أراد منكم بحبحة الجنة فليلزم الجماعة، فإن الشيطان مع الواحد، وهو من الإثنين أبعد، لا يخلون أحدكم بامرأة فإن الشيطان ثالثهما، ومن سرته حسنته وساءته سيئته، فهو مؤمن.
Ahmad (114), Ibn Hibban (7254), and Hakim (1/113) all narrated it through the route of Abdullah bin Mubarak, who said, "Muhammad bin Suqa told us, from Abdullah bin Dinar, from Ibn Umar," and he related it. Tirmidhi (2165) narrated it from Ahmad bin Mani, who said, "Nadr bin Ismail told us," from Muhammad bin Suqa, by the same route. He said, "This hadith is hasan sahih gharib from this route, and Ibn Mubarak narrated it from Muhammad bin Suqa, and this hadith has been narrated through other routes from Umar, from the Prophet ﷺ," meaning connected. But Abu Zura, Abu Hatim, and Daraqutni held the view that it is mursal.
