The Prophet ﷺ said, "The best of you are those of my generation, then those who follow them, then those who follow them."Imran said, "I do not remember whether the Prophet ﷺ mentioned two or three generations after his own."The Prophet ﷺ continued, "After you will come a people who betray and cannot be trusted, who give testimony without being asked to testify, who make vows but do not fulfill them, and among whom obesity will appear."
قال النبي ﷺ: خيركم قرني ثم الذين يلونهم ثم الذين يلونهم. قال عمران: لا أدري أذكر النبي ﷺ بعد قرنه قرنين أو ثلاثة، قال النبي ﷺ: إن بعدكم قوما يخونون ولا يؤتمنون، ويشهدون ولا يستشهدون، وينذرون ولا يفون، ويظهر فيهم السمن.
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Testimonies (2651), and Muslim narrated it in the Merits of the Companions (2535-214), both through routes from Shuba, who said, Abu Jamra narrated to us, he said, I heard Zahdam bin Mudarrib say, I heard Imran bin Husayn mention it. This is the wording of Bukhari, and the wording of Muslim is similar, except that he mentioned the saying "then those who come after them" three times, then said, Imran said, "I do not know whether the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said after his generation twice or three times, then after them there will come a people who bear false witness..." and so on for the rest of the hadith.
