Abdullah bin Hassan reported,

Abdullah bin Hassan reported on the authority of his two grandmothers, Safiyyah bint Ulaybah and Duhaybah bint Ulaybah, that they narrated the report of Qayla bint Makhrama, having been raised under her care. Qayla was their father's grandmother, the mother of his mother. She had been married to Habib bin Azhar, of the Banu Janab clan, who fathered daughters by her. He died at the beginning of Islam, and his brother Athub bin Azhar took her daughters away from her. So she set out at the dawn of Islam in the company of fellow travelers, intending to reach the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Among her companions was Hudayla, who had taken charge of one of her daughters, who was wearing a wool cloak.Hudayla took the girl with her. While the two women were guiding their camel along, a hare suddenly darted across their path. Hudayla, who was telling the story, exclaimed, "By Allah, no descendant of Kaab will ever again travel with Athub on this kind of journey!" Then a small bird darted by, and she named it with a name she gave it, Abdullah bin Hassan, and said about it the same thing she had said about the hare. While the two were leading the camel, it suddenly knelt down and began trembling. Hudayla said, "I swear by my honor, this is a stroke from Athub."Qaila replied, "What shall I do?"She said, "Turn your clothes inside out, putting their backs to their fronts. Reverse them so the back faces forward. And turn your camel's saddlebag around."So Qaila took off her wool cloak and turned it inside out, then reversed her garments back-to-front. When she had done what Hudayla told her, the camel sprang up, then stood and urinated. Hudayla said, "Put your garments back as they were." Qaila did so, and the two set off riding. Then suddenly, Athub was racing after them with a drawn sword. They turned aside toward a large encampment. When she had thrown the camel down toward the awning of the middle tent, like a docile mount, Qaila plunged inside, but Athub caught up with her with the sword and struck off a portion of her braids. Then he said, "Throw my niece out to me, you wretch!" So she tossed the girl to him, and he set her on his shoulder and went off with her. The girl was the dearest one of the household to him.Qaila then went out to a sister of hers married among the Banu Shayban, intending to go on to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in their company. While I was staying with her one night, my sister thinking I was asleep, her husband came in from the evening gathering and said, "Woe to you, I have found a fine traveling companion for Qayla."My sister asked, "Who is it?"He said, "Hurayth bin Hassan al-Shaybani. He is setting out tomorrow morning as the envoy of Bakr bin Waail to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ."When morning came, I went to my camel, having heard what he said, saddled it, and went looking for him. I found him not far off and asked to accompany him. He said, "Yes, gladly," and his mounts were already kneeling ready to depart. So I set out with him, an excellent companion, until we came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was leading the people in the morning prayer. He had begun the prayer just as dawn split, the stars still interwoven in the sky, and men could scarcely recognize one another in the darkness of the night.I lined up with the men, being a woman newly emerged from the days of ignorance. The man next to me in the row said, "Are you a woman or a man?"I said, "No, I am a woman."He said, "You were nearly leading me astray. Pray with the women behind you." Then I noticed a row of women that had formed near the chambers, which I had not seen when I entered. So I joined them. When the sun rose, I drew nearer. Whenever I caught sight of a man of fine appearance and bearing, my eyes would dart toward him, hoping to see the Messenger of Allah ﷺ standing above the people. Then a man came after the sun had risen and said, "Peace be upon you, Messenger of Allah."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "And upon you peace, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings."He, meaning the Prophet ﷺ, was wearing two threadbare wraps that had once been dyed with saffron but whose color had faded. With him was a stripped palm-branch with all but two of its fronds shorn from the top, and he was sitting cross-legged with his knees drawn up. When I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sitting in such a humble posture, I trembled with awe.His companion sitting beside him said, "Messenger of Allah, she is trembling with fright."Without looking at me, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, while I was near his side, "Poor woman, calm yourself, peace be upon you." When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said this, Allah removed from my heart all the dread that had entered it.My companion stepped forward as the boldest of men to give him allegiance to Islam on his own behalf and on behalf of his people. Then he said, "Messenger of Allah, write a covenant between us and the Banu Tamim concerning al-Dahna, that none of them may cross it to come over to our side except as a traveler or a neighbor."The Prophet ﷺ said, "Boy, write it for him concerning al-Dahna."When I saw that he had ordered something written for him that would deeply affect me, for it was my homeland and my home, I said, "Messenger of Allah, he has not asked you for an equitable division of the land. Al-Dahna is, as you know, where camels are tethered and sheep graze, and the women and children of the Banu Tamim live just beyond it."The Prophet said, "Hold off, boy. She speaks the truth. The Muslim is the brother of the Muslim. Water and pasture suffice them both, and they help one another against burdens."When Hurayth saw that his document had been blocked, he struck one hand against the other and said, "You and I have ended up like the saying, until the ewe carries her own hooves." That is, in trouble brought upon oneself.I said, "By Allah, I was a humble woman in the wilderness, suffering at the hand of men, holding back from companions, until I came before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. But I will not abandon my own right when you have asked for yours."He said, "And what right do you have in al-Dahna, may you have no mother?"I said, "The tethering place of my camel, would you strip it away for the sake of his wife's camel?"He said, "There is no doubt. I bear witness, Messenger of Allah, that you are mine. Since you have set me at odds with this woman before him, then I leave it."I said, "Once we have begun, I will not let it go."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ told the messenger boy to settle the matter and turn away from behind the chamber. I bowed my head and then said, "By Allah, you bore him as a resolute man, Messenger of Allah."He answered, "He will be a faltering one on the Day of Apostasy."Then he went off to take counsel of some good. He was struck by fever and breathed his last. Then the Prophet said about the women, "By Him in whose hand Muhammad's soul rests, were you not a needy woman, we would have made you fall on your face today, or you would have been dragged on your face." Abdullah was uncertain which expression was used. "It is enough for one of you to keep good company with his comrade in this world, and when one more deserving comes between him and his friend, he says 'We belong to Allah and to Him we shall return.'"Then he said, "Lord, make me forget what is past, and aid me concerning what remains. By Him in whose hand Muhammad's soul rests, one of you is so eager that his comrade flies to meet him. So servants of Allah, do not reproach your brothers."Then he wrote for her on a piece of red leather, "For Qayla and for the daughters of Qaila, that they shall not be wronged of any right, nor compelled against their will, and every believing Muslim is their helper. Do good and do not do evil."
