We went out with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to attend a funeral. On our way back, a messenger sent by a woman of Quraysh met us and said, "Messenger of Allah, so-and-so invites you and those with you to a meal."So he turned aside, and we turned aside with him. We sat in the places where boys sit with their fathers, in front of them. Then the food was brought, and the Prophet ﷺ put his hand to it, and the people put their hands to it as well. They noticed that he was chewing a morsel but not swallowing it. So they lifted their hands, but forgot about us. Then they remembered and seized our hands. A man would strike the morsel from a boy's hand until it fell. Then they held our hands, watching to see what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would do.He spat the morsel out and threw it down, saying, "I find this to be the flesh of a sheep taken without its owners' permission."The woman stood up and said, "Messenger of Allah, I had it in mind to gather you and those with you for a meal, so I sent to al-Baqi but could find no sheep for sale. Amir bin Ubayy Waqqas had bought a sheep the day before from al-Baqi, so I sent word to him saying, 'Look for a sheep for me at al-Baqi, but none could be found, and I have been told that you bought a sheep, so send it to me.' My messenger did not find him, but found his family, and they handed the sheep over to my messenger."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Feed it to the captives."
Narrated by Ahmad (22509), and this is his wording, and Abu Dawud (3332), both from the route of Asim bin Kulayb, from his father, from a man of the Ansar, who related it. Abu Dawud added at the beginning the story of his sitting by the grave and his instructing the gravedigger to widen the grave. Its chain of transmission is hasan because of Asim and his father, for they both make the hadith hasan.
