Musaylimah the Liar came during the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and began saying, "If Muhammad assigns the leadership to me after him, I will follow him." He came with a large group of his people. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out to meet him, accompanied by Thabit bin Qays bin Shammas, with a piece of palm-branch in his hand, until he stood before Musaylimah among his companions. He said, "If you were to ask me for this piece, I would not give it to you. You will not escape what Allah has decreed concerning you. If you turn away, Allah will surely destroy you. I truly see in you the very person I was shown in my dream. This is Thabit, who will answer you on my behalf." Then he turned away from him.Ibn Abbas said, "I asked about the meaning of the Messenger of Allah's ﷺ words, 'You are the one I was shown in my dream.' Abu Hurairah informed me that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'While I was sleeping, I saw two gold bracelets on my hands, and they troubled me. It was revealed to me in the dream to blow on them, so I blew on them and they flew away. I interpreted them as two liars who would appear after me, one of them being al-Ansi and the other Musaylimah.'"
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Expeditions (4373), and Muslim in the Book of Dreams (21:2274, 2273), both through the route of Shuayb, from Abdullah bin Abu Husayn, who said, Nafi bin Jubayr narrated to us, from Ibn Abbas, who said, and then he mentioned it.His saying, "If you turn back, Allah will surely hamstring you," means, if you turn away from obeying me, Allah will surely kill you. This is one of the miracles of prophethood, for Allah killed him on the day of Yamama.
