I saw Abdullah bin Zubayr on the mountain pass of Medina. The people of Quraysh and others began passing by him, until Abdullah bin Umar passed by him and stopped. He said, "Peace be upon you, Abu Khubayb. Peace be upon you, Abu Khubayb. Peace be upon you, Abu Khubayb. By Allah, I used to forbid you from this. By Allah, I used to forbid you from this. By Allah, I used to forbid you from this. By Allah, as far as I knew, you were a great faster, a great worshipper in prayer, and one who maintained ties of kinship. By Allah, a nation in which you are the worst is indeed a good nation."Then Abdullah bin Umar moved on. News of where Abdullah had stood and what he had said reached Hajjaj, so he sent for the body, had it taken down from its post, and cast into the graves of the Jews. Then he sent for his mother, Asma bint Abu Bakr, but she refused to come to him. He sent the messenger back to her with the words, "You will come to me, or I will send someone who will drag you here by your braids."She refused and said, "By Allah, I will not come to you until you send someone to drag me by my braids."So he said, "Bring me my sandals." He put on his sandals and set off strutting until he entered upon her.He said, "How did you find what I did to the enemy of Allah?"She replied, "I see that you ruined his worldly life, while he ruined your hereafter. It has reached me that you call him, 'Son of the woman of the two belts.' By Allah, I am indeed the woman of the two belts. As for one of them, I used it to lift up the food of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and the food of Abu Bakr away from the animals. As for the other, it is the belt that no woman can do without. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ told us that among Thakeef there would be a great liar and a great destroyer. As for the liar, we have seen him. As for the destroyer, I do not think you are anyone but him."He stood up and left her without responding.
Muslim narrated it in "The Virtues of the Companions" (229:2545), from Uqba bin Mukram Ammi, who said, our teacher Yaqub (that is, Ibn Ishaq Hadrami) narrated to us, Aswad bin Shayban informed us, from Abu Nawfal, and he related it.His words, "a liar," refer to Mukhtar bin Abu Ubayd Thaqafi. His words, "and a destroyer," mean one who brings ruin.Tirmidhi mentioned, from Hisham bin Hassan, who said, "They counted those whom Hajjaj had put to death, and the number reached one hundred and twenty thousand killed."Something of similar meaning has been reported from Ibn Umar, found in Tirmidhi (2220) and Ahmad (4790), but its chain contains Sharik bin Abdullah Nakhai, who has poor memory.
