While we were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ as he was distributing some spoils, Dhu al-Khuwaysirah, a man from the tribe of Banu Tamim, came to him and said, "Messenger of Allah, be just."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "Woe to you! Who would be just if I am not just? I would be ruined and lost if I were not just."Umar said, "Messenger of Allah, give me permission to strike his neck."He said, "Leave him. He has companions whose prayer any one of you would consider insignificant compared to theirs, and whose fasting would seem trivial compared to theirs. They recite the Quran, but it does not pass beyond their throats. They will pass through the religion as an arrow passes through its prey. One looks at its blade and finds nothing on it, then looks at its shaft and finds nothing on it, then looks at its arrow-rod, which is its stem, and finds nothing on it, then looks at its feathers and finds nothing on them, the arrow having passed clean through the dung and blood. Their distinguishing sign is a black man, one of whose upper arms is like a woman's breast, or like a piece of flesh that quivers. They will emerge at a time when people are divided."Abu Saeed said, "I bear witness that I heard this hadith from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and I bear witness that Ali bin Abu Talib fought them while I was with him. He gave orders concerning that man, who was searched for and brought, until I looked at him and found him exactly as the Prophet ﷺ had described."
Bukhari narrated it in the Signs of Prophethood (3610), and Muslim narrated it in Zakat (148:1064), both through the route of Zuhri, "Abu Salama bin Abdul-Rahman informed me, from Abu Saeed Khudri," and he mentioned it.
