People came to Sahl bin Saad and asked, "What was the pulpit of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ made of?"He replied, "No one is left among the people who knows more about it than I do. It was made from the tamarisk wood of al-Ghabah, crafted by so-and-so, the freed slave of so-and-so, for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to lean against a palm trunk in the mosque, praying toward it whenever he gave a sermon. When the pulpit was made and he sat upon it, the palm trunk moaned with longing. So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to it and steadied it" — though in the narration of Abu Hazim the words "and steadied it" do not appear — "until it grew still."
أتوا سهل بن سعد فقالوا: من أي شيء منبر رسول الله ﷺ؟ قال: ما بقي أحد من الناس أعلم به مني، قال: هو من أثل الغابة، و عمله فلان- مولى فلانة- لرسول الله ﷺ، وكان رسول الله ﷺ يستند إلى جذع في المسجد يصلي إليه إذا خطب، فلما اتخذ المنبر فقعد عليه حن الجذع، قال: فأتاه رسول الله ﷺ فوطده- وليس في حديث أبي حازم: فوطده- حتى سكن.
Ibn Abu Shayba (32406) narrated it from Ibn Uyayna, from Abu Hazim, who said, then he related it.Muslim also narrated it in the Book of Mosques (45:544) from Abu Bakr bin Abu Shayba with the same chain, except that he did not give its wording in full, and referred instead to the hadith of Abdul-Aziz bin Abu Hazim, from his father. That version is mentioned in the Book of Friday Prayer, but it does not contain the mention of "the yearning of the trunk," which is the point being cited here.
