Abdullah bin Amr bin Haram died leaving debts behind him, so I sought the help of the Prophet ﷺ in asking his creditors to forgive part of what he owed. The Prophet ﷺ requested this from them, but they refused.The Prophet ﷺ then said to me, "Go and sort your dates into separate piles. Put the Ajwah on its own and the Idhq Zayd on its own, then send for me."I did so, then sent word to the Prophet ﷺ. He came and sat at the top of the dates, or in their middle, then said, "Measure them out for the people."So I measured for them until I had paid them in full what they were owed, and my dates remained as if nothing had been taken from them.
توفي عبد الله بن عمرو بن حرام، وعليه دين فاستعنت النبي ﷺ على غرمائه أن يضعوا من دينه، فطلب النبي ﷺ إليهم فلم يفعلوا، فقال لي النبي ﷺ: اذهب فصنف تمرك أصنافا، العجوة على حدة، وعذق زيد على حدة ثم أرسل إلي، ففعلت ثم أرسلت إلى النبي ﷺ فجلس على أعلاه، أو في وسطه ثم قال: كل للقوم فكلتم حتى أوفيتهم الذي لهم، وبقي تمري، كأنه لم ينقص منه شيء.
Bukhari reported it in the Book of Sales (2127) from Abdan, who said, "Jareer told us, from Mughira, from Shaybi, from Jabir," as mentioned.As for his saying "the ithq of Ibn Zayd," the word ithq, with a fatha on the ayn, means the palm tree, while with a kasra it means the stalk that holds the dates. Ibn Zayd was a person to whom this particular variety of dates was attributed. The varieties of dates in Madinah are extremely numerous. Shaykh Abu Muhammad Juwayni mentioned in al-Furuq that he was once in Madinah and was told that the black dates alone, when counted before its governor, numbered more than sixty varieties.
