Whenever she heard something she did not understand, she would go back over it until she understood it. The Prophet ﷺ said, "Whoever is brought to account is punished."Ayesha said, "I asked, 'But does Allah not say, \"He will have an easy reckoning\" [Inshiqaq 84:8]?'"She continued, "He replied, 'That is only the presentation of deeds. But whoever is examined closely in the reckoning is doomed.'"
كانت لا تسمع شيئا لا تعرفه راجعت فيه حتى تعرفه، وأن النبي ﷺ قال: من حوسب عذب. قالت عائشة: فقلت: أو ليس يقول الله تعالى: {فسوف يحاسب حسابا يسيرا} [سورة الانشقاق: ٨]؟ قالت: فقال: إنما ذلك العرض، ولكن من نوقش الحساب يهلك.
Bukhari related it in the Book of Knowledge (103) from Saeed bin Abu Maryam, who said, Nafi bin Umar told us, who said, Ibn Abu Mulayka told me, that Ayesha, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ, mentioned it. Muslim also related it in the Book of Paradise (2876) through Ayub, from Ibn Abu Mulayka, in a similar wording. Bukhari related it (4939, 6537), and Muslim, through another route, from Abu Yunus Qushayri, from Ibn Abu Mulayka, except that he inserted "Qasim bin Muhammad" between Ibn Abu Mulayka and Ayesha.
