Anas reported that he saw a silver ring on the hand of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for one day. The people then had silver rings made for themselves and wore them. The Messenger of Allah cast aside his ring, so the people cast aside their rings as well.
أنه رأى في يد رسول الله ﷺ خاتما من ورق يوما واحدا، ثم إن الناس اصطنعوا الخواتيم من ورق ولبسوها، فطرح رسول الله خاتمه، فطرح الناس خواتيمهم.
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Clothing (5868), and Muslim narrated it in the Book of Clothing (59:2093), both of them through the route of Ibn Shihab Zuhri, from Anas, who said, and then he mentioned it. His statement, "a ring of silver," then he mentioned his removing it and the people removing theirs, this contradicts what is found in the hadith of Ibn Umar, that this ring remained after the Prophet ﷺ with Abu Bakr, then with Umar, then with Uthman, until it fell into the well. For this reason they said that an error occurred in his statement "a ring of silver," and the correct version is "a ring of gold."
