We did not know that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had been buried until we heard the sound of the shovels in the depth of the night, on the eve of Wednesday.
ما علمنا بدفن رسول الله ﷺ حتى سمعنا صوت المساحي من جوف الليل ليلة الأربعاء.
Ahmad narrated it (26394) from Yaqub, who said, my father narrated to me, from Ibn Ishaq, who said, "Abdullah bin Abu Bakr bin Muhammad bin Amr bin Hazm narrated to me, from his wife Fatimah bint Muhammad bin Umara, from Amra bint Abdul-Rahman bin Saad bin Zurara, from Ayesha," and he mentioned it.Its chain is hasan on account of Muhammad bin Ishaq, since he explicitly stated that he heard the report directly. It so happened that he met Fatimah bint Muhammad bin Umara herself and narrated from her.Bayhaqi narrated it in his Sunan (3/409) and in al-Dalail (7/256) through the route of Yunus bin Bukayr, from Ibn Ishaq, who said, "Fatimah bint Muhammad, the wife of Abdullah bin Abu Bakr, narrated to me." Ibn Ishaq said, "He brought me in to her," he said, "so that you may hear it from her," from Amra, from Ayesha, who said, and she mentioned it.The masahi are the plural of mishah, which is an iron spade used for leveling soil.Muhammad bin Ishaq also narrated it, from Abdul-Rahman bin Qasim, from his father, from Ayesha, who said, "The Messenger of Allah passed away on Monday, and was buried on the night of Wednesday."Ahmad narrated it (24790) from Aswad bin Amir, who said, Harim informed us, who said, Muhammad bin Ishaq narrated to me with his chain of transmission. This agrees with what came before, even though Muhammad bin Ishaq did not explicitly state here that he heard it directly. This is the sahih view, that the Prophet passed away on Monday before midday, and was buried on the night of Wednesday. This is the view held by the majority of biographers and historians, and whatever has been said contrary to this is irregular.
