A red velvet cloth was placed in the grave of the Prophet ﷺ.
جعل في قبر النبي ﷺ قطيفة حمراء.
Muslim narrated it in Janaiz (967) through several routes from Shuba, from Abu Jamra, from Ibn Abbas, as mentioned. The one who threw the cloak was Shaqran, the freed slave of the Prophet ﷺ. Waki said, "This was something particular to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, because Shaqran used to serve the Prophet ﷺ. When the Prophet ﷺ was buried, he saw a cloak that the Prophet ﷺ used to wear, so he threw it into the grave and said, 'No one shall ever wear it after you.' So it was left there." Ibn Saad reported it in al-Tabaqat (2/299-300).
