Abdullah bin Abbas reported,

Ibn Abbas reported, I used to teach the Quran to some of the Muhajirun, among them Abdul-Rahman bin Awf. While I was at his house in Mina, where he was attending Umar bin Khattab during the last pilgrimage Umar performed, Abdul-Rahman returned to me and said, "If only you had seen a man who came to the Commander of the Faithful today and said, 'Commander of the Faithful, what do you say about so-and-so? He is saying, "If Umar were to die, I would pledge allegiance to so-and-so, for by Allah, the pledge to Abu Bakr was nothing but a sudden affair that was concluded."'"Umar became angry and said, "By the will of Allah, I will stand this evening before the people and warn them against these men who wish to usurp their authority."Abdul-Rahman continued, "I said, 'Commander of the Faithful, do not do this. The pilgrimage season gathers the rabble and the common masses of people. They are the ones who will dominate the space around you when you stand to address the people. I fear that you will rise and say something that every flighty person will spread far and wide, that they will not grasp it properly, and that they will not place it in its proper context. Wait until you reach Madinah, for it is the home of the migration and the Sunnah. There you can speak to the people of jurisprudence and the noble figures, and you will say what you wish to say from a position of authority. The people of knowledge will understand your words and place them in their proper context.'"Umar said, "By Allah, if Allah wills, I shall do that at the very first occasion I stand to speak in Madinah."Ibn Abbas continued, We arrived in Madinah at the end of Dhul-Hijjah. When Friday came, I hastened to go early as soon as the sun had passed its zenith, and I found Saeed bin Zayd bin Amr bin Nufayl seated by the corner of the pulpit. I sat near him so that my knee touched his. Before long, Umar bin Khattab came out, and when I saw him approaching, I said to Saeed bin Zayd bin Amr bin Nufayl, "He will say something this evening that he has not said since he became Caliph."Saeed objected to me and said, "What could he possibly say that has not been said before?"Umar sat on the pulpit, and when the muezzins fell silent, he stood and praised Allah as He deserves to be praised. Then he said, "To proceed. I am about to say something to you that has been decreed for me to say. I do not know, perhaps it is on the eve of my death. Whoever understands and grasps it, let him narrate it wherever his mount carries him. Whoever fears he will not grasp it, I do not permit anyone to lie about me."Allah sent Muhammad ﷺ with the truth and revealed to him the Book. Among what Allah revealed was the verse of stoning. We recited it, understood it, and grasped it. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ carried out stoning, and we carried it out after him. I fear that as time passes, someone may say, 'By Allah, we do not find the verse of stoning in the Book of Allah,' and so they will go astray by abandoning an obligation that Allah revealed. Stoning in the Book of Allah is a binding duty upon any married man or woman who commits adultery, when proof is established, or pregnancy occurs, or there is confession."Furthermore, we used to recite among what we recited from the Book of Allah, 'Do not turn away from your fathers, for it is disbelief on your part to turn away from your fathers,' or, 'Indeed, it is disbelief on your part to turn away from your fathers.'"Indeed, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Do not exalt me as Isa son of Maryam was exalted. Rather say, the servant of Allah and His Messenger.'"It has reached me that one of you is saying, 'By Allah, if Umar were to die, I would pledge allegiance to so-and-so.' Let no man deceive himself by saying that the pledge to Abu Bakr was a sudden affair that was concluded. Indeed, it was so, but Allah protected against its evil. None among you has the necks of men stretched toward him as Abu Bakr did. Whoever pledges allegiance to a man without consultation with the Muslims, no allegiance is to be given to him nor to the one who pledged to him, lest both be killed."Part of our story is that when Allah took His Prophet ﷺ, the Ansar opposed us and gathered all together at the Saqifah of Banu Saidah. Ali, Zubayr, and those with them also separated from us, while the Muhajirun gathered around Abu Bakr. I said to Abu Bakr, 'Abu Bakr, let us go to these brothers of ours from the Ansar.' So we set off heading toward them."As we drew near, two righteous men from among them met us and mentioned what the people had agreed upon. They asked, 'Where are you headed, company of Muhajirun?'"We replied, 'We are going to these brothers of ours from the Ansar.'"They said, 'You need not go near them. Settle your own affair.'"I said, 'By Allah, we shall go to them.' So we went on until we came upon them at the Saqifah of Saidah. There was a man wrapped in a garment in their midst."I asked, 'Who is this?'"They replied, 'This is Saad bin Ubada.'"I asked, 'What is wrong with him?'"They said, 'He is feverish.'"After we sat for a short while, their speaker pronounced the testimony of faith and praised Allah as He deserves to be praised. Then he said, 'To proceed. We are the supporters of Allah and the army of Islam, while you, company of Muhajirun, are a small group. A faction of your people has now come and they wish to cut us off from our origins and exclude us from authority.'"When he finished speaking, I wished to speak, for I had prepared a speech that pleased me which I wished to deliver before Abu Bakr. I had been trying to soften some of his sharpness. But when I was about to speak, Abu Bakr said, 'Take it easy.' I disliked angering him, so Abu Bakr spoke. He was more forbearing and dignified than I. By Allah, he did not omit a single phrase that had pleased me in my prepared speech without saying its like or better extemporaneously, until he fell silent."He said, 'Whatever good you have mentioned about yourselves, you are deserving of it. But this matter will not be acknowledged except for this clan of Quraysh. They are the most central of the Arabs in lineage and homeland. I have chosen for you one of these two men, so pledge allegiance to whichever of them you wish.' He took my hand and the hand of Abu Ubayda bin Jarra, who was sitting between us. I disliked nothing of what he said except this. By Allah, I would rather be brought forward and have my neck struck, where doing so would not bring me into sin, than rule over a people that includes Abu Bakr, unless my soul tempts me at the moment of death with something I do not feel now."A speaker from the Ansar then said, 'I am the well-rubbed scratching post and the supported palm trunk. Let there be one ruler from us and one from you, company of Quraysh.'"The clamor grew loud and voices rose, until I feared dissension. So I said, 'Stretch out your hand, Abu Bakr.' He stretched out his hand and I pledged allegiance to him, and the Muhajirun pledged allegiance to him, and then the Ansar pledged allegiance. We then leapt upon Saad bin Ubada, and a speaker from them said, 'You have killed Saad bin Ubada.'"I said, 'May Allah kill Saad bin Ubada.'"Umar continued, "By Allah, in the situation we faced, we found nothing stronger than pledging allegiance to Abu Bakr. We feared that if we left the people without a pledge having been made, they might pledge allegiance to one of their own after we departed. Then either we would have to pledge allegiance to someone we did not approve of, or oppose them, which would lead to corruption. So whoever pledges allegiance to a man without consultation with the Muslims, neither he nor the one to whom allegiance was pledged is to be followed, lest both be killed."
