Ayesha reported,

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ died while Abu Bakr was at Sunh. Ismail said, meaning at Aliya. Umar stood up saying, "By Allah, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ has not died."She said, Umar said, "By Allah, nothing else came to my mind. Allah will surely raise him up, and he will cut off the hands and feet of some men."Then Abu Bakr came, uncovered the face of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and kissed him. He said, "May my father and mother be sacrificed for you. You were good in life and good in death. By the One in whose hand my soul is, Allah will never make you taste death twice."Then he went out and said, "You who are swearing oaths, take it easy."When Abu Bakr spoke, Umar sat down. Abu Bakr praised Allah and extolled Him, then said, "Whoever used to worship Muhammad ﷺ, Muhammad has died. Whoever used to worship Allah, Allah is alive and does not die." He recited, "Indeed, you are to die, and indeed, they are to die" [Zumar 39:30], and he recited, "Muhammad is no more than a messenger, and messengers have passed on before him. So if he were to die or be killed, would you turn back on your heels? And whoever turns back on his heels will never harm Allah at all, and Allah will reward the grateful" [Aal Imran 3:144].He said, the people then broke down weeping. He said, the Ansar gathered around Saad bin Ubada in the portico of Banu Saida and said, "Let there be a leader from among us and a leader from among you." So Abu Bakr, Umar bin Khattab, and Abu Ubayda bin Jarra went to them. Umar began to speak, but Abu Bakr silenced him. Umar used to say, "By Allah, I only intended by that to deliver a speech I had prepared and which pleased me, fearing that Abu Bakr would not convey it."Then Abu Bakr spoke, and he spoke more eloquently than anyone. In his speech he said, "We are the leaders and you are the ministers."Hubab bin Mundhir said, "No, by Allah, we will not do that. A leader from among us and a leader from among you."Abu Bakr replied, "No, rather we are the leaders and you are the ministers. They are the most central of the Arabs in their dwellings and the noblest of them in lineage. So pledge allegiance to Umar or to Abu Ubayda."Umar said, "Rather, we will pledge allegiance to you, for you are our master, the best among us, and the most beloved of us to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ."Then Umar took his hand and pledged allegiance to him, and the people pledged allegiance to him.Someone said, "You have killed Saad bin Ubada."Umar said, "May Allah kill him."
