I went with a companion of mine to Ayesha and asked her permission to enter. She threw down a cushion for us and drew the curtain toward herself. My companion said, "Umm Muiminin, what do you say about 'irak'?"She said, "And what is 'irak'?" Then she struck my companion's shoulder and said, "Stop, you have harmed your brother." Then she said, "What is 'irak'? Menstruation? Say what Allah said, menstruation."Then she said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to draw close against me and take from my head, with a garment between him and me, while I was menstruating."Then she said, "Whenever the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed my door, he would usually toss out some word by which Allah would bring benefit. But one day he passed and said nothing, and then he passed again and said nothing, two or three times. So I said, 'Girl, set a cushion out for me by the door.' I bound my head with a cloth, and when he passed by me he said, 'Ayesha, what is the matter with you?'I said, 'My head is aching.'He said, 'As for me, oh my head!' Then he went away, and it was only a short while before he was brought back carried in a cloak. He came in to me and sent word to his wives, saying, 'I have fallen ill, and I cannot make my rounds among you. Give me leave to stay with Ayesha.'So I would help him with his wudu, and I had never helped anyone with wudu before him. One day, while his head was resting on my shoulder, his head inclined toward mine, and I thought he wanted something from my head. Then a cool drop of moisture came from his mouth and fell on the hollow of my throat, and my skin shivered at it. I thought he had fainted, so I covered him with a garment. Then Umar and Mughira bin Shuba came and asked permission to enter, and I let them in and drew the curtain toward myself. Umar looked at him and said, 'Oh, this swoon! How severe is the Messenger of Allah's swoon ﷺ!' Then the two of them rose, and when they drew near the door Mughira said, 'Umar, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ has died.'Umar said, 'You lie. You are only a man whom turmoil has thrown into confusion. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ will not die until Allah
has destroyed the hypocrites.'Then Abu Bakr came, and I lifted the curtain. He looked at him and said, 'To Allah we belong and to Him we return. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ has died.' Then he came to him from the side of his head, bent his mouth down and kissed his forehead, and said, 'Oh, the Prophet!' Then he raised his head, bent his mouth down again and kissed his forehead, and said, 'Oh, the chosen one!' Then he raised his head, bent his mouth down and kissed him, and said, 'Oh, the dear friend! The Messenger of Allah ﷺ has died.'Then he went out to the masjid, where Umar was addressing the people and speaking, saying, 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ will not die until Allah
has destroyed the hypocrites.'So Abu Bakr spoke. He praised Allah and extolled Him, then said, 'Allah
says, "Indeed you will die, and indeed they will die" [Zumar 39:30],' and he finished the verse. Then he recited, "Muhammad is no more than a messenger, and messengers have passed away before him. So if he dies or is killed, will you turn back on your heels?" [Al Imran 3:144], and he finished the verse. Then he said, 'Whoever used to worship Allah
, Allah is alive. And whoever used to worship Muhammad, Muhammad has died.'Umar said, 'Is that really in the Book of Allah? I never realized it was in the Book of Allah.'Then Umar said, 'People, this is Abu Bakr, and he is the elder of the Muslims, so pledge your allegiance to him.' And they pledged their allegiance to him."
Narrated by Ahmad (25841), Abu Yaala (4962), and Bayhaqi in Dalail (7/213–214), all from the hadith of Abu Imran Jawni, from Yazid bin Babanus, and he related it. Abu Dawud (2137) narrated it in abbreviated form through this same route. Its chain of transmission is hasan because of Yazid bin Babanus, for he is hasan al-hadith. Daraqutni said of him, "There is no harm in him," Ibn Adi said, "His hadiths are well known," and Ibn Hibban regarded him as reliable.
