The Messenger of Allah ﷺ fell ill with a sickness that caused him intense distress and pain. She said, "I said, 'Messenger of Allah, you are showing distress and discomfort. If a woman among us did this, we would find it strange of her.'"He replied, "Do you not know that hardship is intensified upon the believer so that it may serve as an expiation for his sins?"
مرض رسول الله ﷺ مرضا اشتد منه ضجره أو وجعه، قالت: فقلت: يا رسول الله، إنك لتجزع أو تضجر، لو فعلته امرأة منا عجبت منها! قال: أوما علمت أن المؤمن يشدد عليه ليكون كفارة لخطاياه؟

Ibn Saad narrated it in al-Tabaqat (2/207) from Muhammad bin Abdullah al-Ansari, who said, Israil bin Yunus informed us, from Ashath bin Abu Shatha, from Abu Burda, from one of the wives of the Prophet ﷺ, and he thought it was Ayesha, who said, and then she mentioned it. Its chain of transmission is sahih.
