We administered medicine to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ by force during his illness. He gestured to us not to do so, but we assumed it was just the dislike a sick person has for medicine. When he recovered, he said, "Not one of you shall remain without having medicine forced into his mouth, except Abbas, for he was not present with you."
لددنا رسول الله ﷺ في مرضه، فأشار أن لا تلدوني، فقلنا: كراهية المريض للدواء، فلما أفاق قال: لا يبقى أحد منكم إلا لد غير العباس؛ فإنه لم يشهدكم.
Bukhari narrated it in Maghazi (4458) and Muslim in Salam (2213:85), both through the route of Yahya bin Saeed (he is Al-Qattan), who said, Musa bin Abu Ayesha told me, from Ubaydullah bin Abdullah, from Ayesha, who said, and then she mentioned it. His statement, "We forced medicine into his mouth," means we placed medicine in the corner of his mouth without his choosing it.Imam Ahmad narrated it (24870) through the route of Abdul-Rahman bin Abu Zinad, from Hisham bin Urwa, who said, my father told me that Ayesha said to him, "O son of my sister, I witnessed something amazing regarding how much the Messenger of Allah's uncle was honored. The Messenger of Allah used to suffer from a pain in his side, which would become very severe, and we used to say, the Messenger of Allah has kidney pain, we did not know how to describe it as a pain in the side. Then one day the Messenger of Allah was afflicted, and it became very severe, until he lost consciousness, and we feared for him, and the people rushed to him in alarm. We thought he had pleurisy, so we forced medicine into his mouth. Then the Messenger of Allah's distress eased, and he regained consciousness, and realized that medicine had been forced into his mouth, and he found the trace of the medicine. He said, "You thought Allah had given it power over me. Allah would never give it power over me. By the One in whose hand is my soul, no one shall remain in this house except that medicine is forced into their mouth, except my uncle." Then I saw them forcing medicine into the men's mouths one by one.Ayesha said, and she recalled who was in the house that day, mentioning their merit, and all the men had medicine forced into their mouths. Then the forcing of medicine reached the wives of the Prophet, and it was forced into the mouth of each woman one by one, until it reached a woman among us, (Ibn Abu Zinad said, I only know her to be Maymuna, he said, and some people said Umm Salama), and she said, "By Allah, I am fasting." So we said, "How wretched it would be if we thought we could leave you exempt, when the Messenger of Allah has sworn an oath." So we forced the medicine into her mouth. By Allah, O son of my sister, she was indeed fasting."Its chain of transmission is hasan on account of Abdul-Rahman bin Abu Zinad.
