The Messenger of Allah ﷺ, when he performed Hajj with his wives, said, "This is the Hajj, and after this you should remain on your mats."
أن رسول الله ﷺ لما حج بنسائه قال: إنما هذه الحجة، ثم الزمن ظهور الحصر.
Imam Ahmad (9765), Abu Yaala (7158), Tayalisi (1752), and Bayhaqi (5/228) all narrated it through the route of Ibn Abu Dhib, from Salih the freedman of Tawama, from Abu Hurairah, who related it.The last two of them added, "So they continued to perform Hajj, except Sawda bint Zama and Zaynab bint Jahsh, for the two of them used to say, By Allah, no mount will move us after what we heard from the Messenger of Allah."As for the meaning of the hadith, Bayhaqi said, "The fact that Ayesha and the other mothers of the believers performed Hajj after the Messenger of Allah indicates that what is meant by this report is the obligation of Hajj upon them once, just as its obligation upon men was made clear to be once, not a prohibition against doing it more than that."His statement, "the mats," with a damma and a silent sad without doubling, is the plural of "hasir," the mat that is spread out in houses. This contains an indication that they should stay in their houses and forgo voluntary Hajj after Hajj had become easy for them alongside the Prophet, not a total prohibition of voluntary Hajj after fulfilling the obligatory one. It has been established as sahih that the wives of the Prophet did in fact perform Hajj after him.
