The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent Abu Musa and Muaz bin Jabal to Yemen. He sent each of them to one of its districts, for Yemen had two districts. He said to them, "Make things easy and do not make them difficult. Give glad tidings and do not drive people away."Each of them set off to his assigned region. Whenever one of them traveled in his territory and came close to his companion, he would visit him to renew their meeting and greet him.Muaz traveled in his territory near his companion Abu Musa, riding on his mule until he reached him. He found him seated with people gathered around him, and there was a man with his hands tied to his neck.Muaz asked him, "Abdullah bin Qays, who is this?"Abu Musa replied, "This is a man who disbelieved after accepting Islam."Muaz said, "I will not dismount until he is killed."Abu Musa said, "He was brought here for that very purpose, so dismount."Muaz said, "I will not dismount until he is killed."So Abu Musa gave the order, and the man was executed. Then Muaz dismounted and said, "Abdullah, how do you recite the Quran?"Abu Musa replied, "I recite it in portions throughout the day."Then he asked, "And how do you recite, Muaz?"Muaz answered, "I sleep during the first part of the night, then rise after I have taken my share of sleep, and I recite whatever Allah has decreed for me. I count my sleep as a reward just as I count my standing in prayer as a reward."
