The Prophet ﷺ sent his grandfather Abu Musa and Muaz to Yemen, saying, "Make things easy and do not make them difficult, give glad tidings and do not drive people away, and cooperate with one another."Abu Musa said, "Prophet of Allah, in our land there is a drink made from barley called mizr, and a drink made from honey called bita."He replied, "Every intoxicant is forbidden."So they set out, and Muaz said to Abu Musa, "How do you recite the Quran?"He answered, "Standing, sitting, and while riding my mount, and I recite it in portions throughout the day."Muaz said, "As for me, I sleep and I rise, and I count on reward for my sleep just as I count on reward for my standing in prayer."He pitched a tent, and the two would visit one another. Muaz visited Abu Musa and found a man bound in restraints. He asked, "What is this?"Abu Musa replied, "A Jew who embraced Islam and then apostatized."Muaz said, "I will surely strike off his neck."
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Military Expeditions (4344) from Muslim, who said, Shuba narrated to us, Saeed bin Abu Burda narrated to us, from his father, and he related it, and this is his wording. He also mentioned corroborating narrations from Shuba.Muslim included it in the Book of Leadership (1733:15) through another route from Abu Burda, containing some of its meanings.
