The Prophet ﷺ sent Ali to Khalid to collect the fifth, and I disliked Ali. He had bathed, so I said to Khalid, "Do you not see this?"When we came to the Prophet ﷺ, I mentioned that to him, and he said, "Burayda, do you dislike Ali?"I said, "Yes."He said, "Do not dislike him, for he is entitled to even more than that from the fifth."
بعث النبي ﷺ عليا إلى خالدليقبض الخمس، وكنت أبغض عليا، وقد اغتسل فقلت لخالد: ألا ترى إلى هذا؟ فلما قدمنا على النبي ﷺ لا ذكرت ذلك له، فقال: يا بريدة أتبغض عليا؟ فقلت: نعم. قال: لا تبغضه؛ فإن له في الخمس أكثر من ذلك.
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Military Expeditions (4350), from Muhammad bin Bashshar, who said, Rawh bin Ubada narrated to us, who said, Ali bin Suwayd bin Manjuf narrated to us, from Abdullah bin Burayda, from his father, who said, and then he mentioned it.His saying, "to take the fifth," means the fifth of the spoils of war. In another version, "to divide the fifth."His saying, "I used to hate Ali," this hatred was because he saw that Ali had taken a slave girl from the spoils, and he thought that he had misappropriated it. But when the Prophet ﷺ informed him that he had actually taken less than his rightful share, he came to love him, as is mentioned in the hadith that follows.
