Wathila bin Asqa reported,

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ called for the expedition to Tabuk, so I went out to my family. When I returned, the first of the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had already departed. So I began going through Medina calling out, "Is there anyone who will carry a man and give him his share of the spoils?"An old man from the Ansar called back, "We will give him his share on the condition that he rides in turns with us and his food is shared with us. Will you accept?"I said, "Yes."He said, "Then travel with the blessing of Allah."So I set out with the best of companions until Allah granted us victory and spoils. I received some young she-camels, which I drove along until I came to him. He came out and sat on one of the saddlebags of his camels, then said, "Drive them away from me."Then he said, "Drive them back toward me."He said, "I see your young camels are excellent."I said, "They are simply the spoils you stipulated for me."He said, "Take your young camels, nephew. It was something other than your share that we wanted."In another narration from him, he said, I set out as an emigrant to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. When the people came forward, some standing and some leaving, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would not see anyone seated without approaching him and asking, "Do you have any need?" He began with the first row, then the second, then the third, until he came near me.He asked, "Do you have any need?"I said, "Yes, Messenger of Allah."He asked, "What is your need?"I said, "Islam."He said, "It is better for you."He asked, "And will you emigrate?"I said, "Yes."He asked, "The emigration of the desert or the emigration of permanence?"I asked, "Which of them is better?"He said, "The emigration of permanence is that you remain with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The emigration of the desert is that you return to your desert dwelling, but you are still bound to listen and obey in hardship and ease, in what you dislike and what you delight in, and even when others are preferred over you."So I extended my hand to him and pledged allegiance. He made an exception where I had not made one for myself, saying, "as far as you are able."Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ called for the expedition to Tabuk, so I went out to my family. I found my father sitting in the sun with his back to it. I greeted him with the greeting of Islam.He said, "Have you become a Sabian?"I said, "I have embraced Islam."He said, "Perhaps Allah will place good for us and for you in this." So I was content with that from him.While I was with him, my sister came to greet me. I said, "Sister, give me the provisions a woman gives her brother who is going on a campaign." She brought me dough in a bucket, the bucket in a feed bag.Then I returned, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had already set out. So I set out with the best of companions, who gave me more rides than we had agreed upon and singled me out with food besides what I ate with him.Allah granted us spoils, and I received some young she-camels. I drove them along until I came to him in his tent. I called him, and he came out and sat on one of the saddlebags of his camels.Then he said, "Drive them away from me." So I drove them away.Then he said, "Drive them back toward me." So I drove them back.He said, "I see your young camels are excellent."I said, "They are simply the spoils you stipulated for me."He said, "Take your young camels, nephew. It was something other than your share that we wanted."

عن واثلة بن الأسقع، قال

نادى رسول الله ﷺ في غزوة تبوك، فخرجت إلى أهلي، فأقبلت وقد خرج أول صحابة رسول الله ﷺ فطفقت في المدينة أنادي: ألا من يحمل رجلا له سهمه، فنادي شيخ من الأنصار، قال: لنا سهمه على أن نحمله عقبة وطعامه معنا؟ قلت: نعم، قال: فسر على بركة الله، قال فخرجت مع خير صاحب حتى أفاء الله علينا، فأصابني قلائص فسقتهن حتى أتيته، فخرج فقعد على حقيبة من حقائب إبله، ثم قال: سقهن مدبرات، ثم قال: سقهن مقبلات، فقال: ما أرى قلائصك إلا كراما، قال: إنما هي غنيمتك التي شرطت لك، قال: خذ قلائصك يا ابن أخي، فغير سهمك أردنا. وفي رواية عنه: خرجت مهاجرا إلى رسول الله ﷺ فلما أقبل الناس من بين خارج وقائم فجعل رسول الله ﷺ لا يرى جالسا إلا دنا إليه فسأله: هل لك من حاجة؟ وبدأ بالصف الأول ثم بالثاني ثم الثالث حتى دنا إلي، فقال: لك من حاجة؟ قلت: نعم يا رسول الله! قال: وما حاجتك؟ قلت: الإسلام قال: هو خير لك قال: وتهاجر قلت: نعم قال: هجرة البادية أو هجرة الباتة؟ قلت: أيهما أفضل؟ قال: الهجرة الباتة: أن تثبت مع رسول الله ﷺ، وهجرة البادية أن ترجع إلى باديتك وعليك السمع والطاعة في عسرك ويسرك، ومكرهك ومنشطك، وأثرة عليك قال: فبسطت يدي إليه، فبايعته، قال: واستثنى حيث لم أستثن لنفسي فيما استطعت قال: ونادى رسول الله ﷺ في غزوة تبوك فخرجت إلى أهلي، فوافقت أبي جالسا في الشمس يستدبرها فسلمت عليه بتسليم الإسلام، فقال: أصبوت؟ فقلت: أسلمت، فقال: لعل الله يجعل لنا ولك فيه خيرا، فرضيت بذلك منه، فبينا أنا معه إذ أتتني أختي تسلم علي، فقلت: يا أختاه! زوديني زاد المرأة أخاها غازيا فأتتني بعجين في دلو، والدلو في مزود، فأقبلت، وقد خرج رسول الله ﷺ فجعلت أنادي: ألا من يحمل رجلا له سهمه فناداني شيخ من الأنصار، فقال: لنا سهمه على أن نحمله عقبة وطعامه معنا فقلت: نعم، قال: سر على بركة الله فخرجت مع خير صاحب لي زادني حملانا على ما شارطت وخصني بطعام سوى ما أطعم معه، أفاء الله علينا، فأصابني قلائص فسقتهن حتى أتيته وهو في خبائه، فدعوته فخرج فقعد على حقيبة من حقائب إبله، ثم قال: سقهن مدبرات، فسقتهن مدبرات ثم قال: سقهن مقبلات، فسقتهن مقبلات، فقال: ما أرى قلائصك إلا كراما، قال: قلت: إنما هي غنيمتك التي شرطت لك، فقال: خذ قلائصك يا ابن أخي، فغير سهمك أردنا.
