When the Prophet ﷺ set out as a migrant to Madinah, Quraysh offered a reward of one hundred she-camels to whoever would bring him back.He said, "While I was sitting in the gathering of my people, a man came and said, 'By Allah, I just saw three riders pass by me. By Allah, I think one of them was Muhammad .'"He continued, "I gestured to him with my eye to be silent, and I said, 'They are only the sons of so-and-so searching for a stray animal of theirs.' He replied, 'Perhaps,' and fell silent.I waited a little, then got up and went into my house. I ordered my horse to be brought and tied for me at the bottom of the valley, and I took out my weapons from behind my chamber. I took my divining arrows with which I sought omens, then put on my armor. I drew out my arrows and cast lots, and the arrow I disliked came out, the one telling me not to harm him, though I had been hoping to bring him back and claim the hundred camels.I rode out following his trail. While my horse was galloping hard with me, it stumbled and I fell off. I drew out my arrows again and cast lots, and again the arrow I disliked came out, telling me not to harm him. But I refused to do anything except follow him. So I mounted again. When the group came into view and I looked at them, my horse stumbled with me and its forelegs sank into the ground, and I fell off. The horse pulled its forelegs out, and there followed something like smoke or dust. I realized then that he was protected from me and that he would prevail. So I called out to them and said, 'Wait for me. By Allah, I will not harm you, and nothing you dislike will come to you from me.'The Prophet ﷺ said, 'Ask him what he wants.'I said to him, 'Write a document of safe passage for me.' He wrote it and tossed it to me. I fell silent and did not mention any of what had happened. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ conquered Makkah and finished with Hunayn, I went out to him carrying the document he had written for me. As I was heading toward him, I entered into the midst of one of the battalions of the Ansar. They began striking me with their spears, saying, 'Get back, get back,' until I drew near the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He was on his she-camel, and I could see his shin in the stirrup, looking like the heart of a palm. I raised my hand with the document, and the Prophet ﷺ said, "Today is a day of fulfilling promises and showing kindness. Let him approach."He said, "So I embraced Islam, then departed and brought my charity offerings to the Prophet ﷺ."
Ibn Abu Asim narrated it in Ahad wal-Mathani (1029, 1030), and Ibn Abu Amr Adani in his Musnad, Matalib Aliyah (9/467), and Tabarani in Kabir (7/134,135), all of them from the hadith of Abdul-Rahman bin Malik, who is the nephew of Suraqa bin Malik bin Jushum, that his father told him that he heard Suraqa bin Malik, and he related it. The wording given is that of Ibn Abu Asim. Its origin is found in the Sahih, mentioned earlier in the story of the Hijrah, except that it did not mention the account of Suraqa bin Malik's presence at Hunayn.Humaydi also narrated it in his Musnad (2/401) from Sufyan, who said, "I heard Zuhri report from the son of Suraqa, or the nephew of Suraqa, from Suraqa," and he related it. Sufyan said, "This is what I memorized from Zuhri, though something at the beginning of it became confused for me. Waail bin Dawud told me part of this speech from Zuhri, but I cannot distinguish clearly between what I memorized from Zuhri and what Waail told me." He said, "Suraqa," and related something similar. This isnad is also sahih. As for his statement, "what Waail told me, he said, Suraqa," the speaker there is the nephew of Suraqa, not Waail bin Dawud.
