We asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ three things, but he did not grant us a concession. We said, "Our land is a cold land," so we asked him to grant us a concession regarding purification, but he did not grant us one. We asked him to grant us a concession regarding the use of the gourd vessel, but he did not grant us one even for a moment. And we asked him to return Abu Bakra to us, but he refused, saying, "He is the freedman of Allah and the freedman of His Messenger."Abu Bakra had gone out to the Prophet ﷺ when he was besieging Taif, and there he embraced Islam.
Ahmad (17530) narrated it from Yahya bin Adam, who said, "Mufaddal bin Muhalhal narrated to us, from Mughira, from Shibak, from Shaybi, from a man from Thaqif," and he related it. Its chain of transmission is sahih. It has also been narrated with a daif chain of transmission from Ibn Abbas, who said, "On the day of Taif, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ freed every one of the polytheists' slaves who came out to him." Ahmad (1959), Abu Yaala (2564), and Tabarani (12079) all narrated it through the hadith of Abu Muawiya, who said, "Hajjaj narrated to us, from Hakam, from Miqsam, from Ibn Abbas," and he related it. But Hajjaj is Ibn Artaah, a mudallis and daif narrator, and I have not found any explicit statement clarifying the tadlis, nor any corroborating narration.Likewise, Ahmad (2176) also narrated it from Abdul-Quddus bin Bakr bin Khunays, who said, "Hajjaj narrated to us with his chain of transmission," and in it appears, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ laid siege to the people of Taif, and two slaves came out to him, so he freed them both, one of them being Abu Bakra. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to free slaves whenever they came out to him."
