Abu Qatada reported,

Abu Qatada reported, "We set out with the Prophet ﷺ during the year of Hunayn. When we met the enemy, the Muslims fell into disarray. I saw one of the polytheists overpowering a Muslim, so I came up behind him and struck him with my sword on the shoulder vein, cutting through his coat of mail. He turned on me and gripped me in such an embrace that I sensed the smell of death. Then death overtook him and he released me. I caught up with Umar bin Khattab and asked, 'What is the matter with the people?'He replied, 'It is the decree of Allah عز وجل.'Then the people returned, and the Prophet ﷺ sat down and announced, 'Whoever has killed an enemy and can produce proof of it shall have his spoils.'I said, 'Who will bear witness for me?' Then I sat down. The Prophet ﷺ then repeated the same announcement, so I stood up.He asked, 'What is the matter with you, Abu Qatada?' I told him what had happened.A man said, 'He has spoken the truth, and the slain man's spoils are with me. So persuade him to give them up to me.'Abu Bakr said, 'No, by Allah! He would not turn to one of the lions of Allah who fights for the cause of Allah and His Messenger ﷺ and hand over his spoils to you.'The Prophet ﷺ said, 'He has spoken the truth, so give them to him.' He gave them to me, and with them I bought a small palm grove among Banu Salama. It was the first property I acquired in Islam."
