When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had finished with the conquest of Mecca, Malik bin Awf al-Nasri gathered together the tribes of Banu Nasr, Banu Jusham, and Banu Saad bin Bakr, along with scattered groups from Banu Hilal, who were few in number, and some people from Banu Amr bin Amir and Awf bin Amir. The confederate clans of Thakeef and Banu Malik also joined him. Then he led them all toward the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, bringing along their wealth, women, and children. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ heard about them, he sent Abdullah bin Abu Hadrad al-Aslami and said, "Go and infiltrate the people so that you can bring us news of them."So he went among them and stayed for a day or two, then came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and reported what he had learned. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to Umar bin Khattab, "Do you not hear what Ibn Abu Hadrad is saying?"Umar replied, "He is lying."Ibn Abu Hadrad said, "By Allah, Umar, if you accuse me of lying, you have at times denied the truth itself."Umar said, "Messenger of Allah, do you not hear what Ibn Abu Hadrad is saying?"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Umar, you yourself were once astray, and Allah guided you."Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent word to Safwan bin Umaya, asking him for some coats of mail he had, one hundred in number, along with the equipment needed to put them to use.Safwan asked, "Is this seizure by force, Muhammad?"He replied, "Rather it is a loan, guaranteed until we return them to you."Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ set out on the march.
Hakim (3/48–49) narrated it from Abu Abbas Muhammad bin Yaqub, who said, Ahmad bin Abdul-Jabbar told us, Yunus bin Bukayr told us, from Ibn Ishaq, who said, Asim bin Umar bin Qatada told me, from Abdul-Rahman bin Jabir, from Jabir bin Abdullah, and he related it. Bayhaqi narrated it through this same route in Dalail (5/119–121), and this is his wording. He said, Amr bin Shuayb, Zuhri, Abdullah bin Abu Bakr bin Hazm, and Abdullah bin Mukdam bin Abdul-Rahman Thaqafi all narrated accounts of the battle of Hunayn, when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ marched toward them and they marched toward him, and some of them related things that others did not relate. Their accounts have been combined, and he related something similar. Its chain is hasan on account of Muhammad bin Ishaq, since he stated his source explicitly, and Hakim graded it sahih.Ibn Hisham mentioned something similar in his Sirah (2/437–438), but omitted the chain of transmission.Bayhaqi said, Abu Abdullah added in his narration, saying, Ibn Ishaq said, Zuhri told us, saying, The Messenger of Allah ﷺ set out for Hunayn with two thousand men from Makkah and ten thousand who were with him, and he marched with them. That is, two thousand from the people of Makkah who were known as the Tulaqa (the freed ones), and ten thousand from the Muhajirun and Ansar and the Arab tribes who had come with the Prophet ﷺ for the conquest of Makkah. They met in a valley between Makkah and Taif called "Hunayn."
