The Messenger of Allah ﷺ dispatched us on a military expedition and said, "If you find so-and-so and so-and-so, burn them with fire."Then, just as we were about to set out, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "I had ordered you to burn so-and-so and so-and-so, but no one punishes with fire except Allah. So if you find them, kill them."
بعثنا رسول الله ﷺ في بعث، فقال: إن وجدتم فلانا وفلانا فأحرقوهما بالنار ثم قال رسول الله ﷺ حين أردنا الخروج: إني أمرتكم أن تحرقوا فلانا وفلانا، وإن النار لا يعذب بها إلا الله، فإن وجدتموهما فاقتلوهما.
Bukhari narrated it in the chapter on jihad and military expeditions (3016), from Qutayba bin Saeed, who said, Layth narrated to us, from Bukayr, from Sulayman bin Yasar, from Abu Hurairah, and he related it. Tirmidhi (1571) added, "the two men from Quraysh." As for his words, "so-and-so and so-and-so," the first one's name was Habbar bin Aswad, the one who harmed Zaynab, the daughter of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, when she left Makkah migrating to Madinah, for he kept striking her camel with his spear until he threw her down, and she miscarried what was in her womb, and blood poured from her. The second one's name was Nafi bin Qays. This expedition was sent out by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ under the command of Hamza bin Amr Aslami. See Fath al-Bari (6/149). They did not catch up with Habbar and his companion, so they returned. Habbar accepted Islam at Jirana, which was after the conquest of Makkah, and he then came to Madinah.
